The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) says it’s launching a new pilot program requiring customers who appear 17 and older to present a government identification before entering specific stores.

The “controlled entrances pilot” will be introduced at six LCBO locations in Thunder Bay, Sioux Lookout and Kenora. An LCBO spokesperson said the outcomes will be monitored over 12 months, and stores will keep shoppers’ personal information for 14 days.

The LCBO said the customer’s information is only accessed if there is an incident requiring investigation, and it is not linked to any other system, sold or used for marketing purposes.

The program was initiated due to what the LCBO called a rise in theft and violent incidents in the retail industry, which it says poses a safety risk for employees and customers working and shopping in stores.

How does a controlled entrance work? 

The controlled entrance will have an exterior door, a vestibule, and an interior door. Customers will enter the exterior door, present their ID to security personnel at the vestibule and — assuming the individual and their ID meet all criteria — the interior door will be opened so they can shop in store. Only one customer can enter the store at a time.

Really? This is what society has come to?

Perhaps if there were more severe penalties for retail theft, there would be less of it.

We have had this in Winnipeg for a couple of years now due to massive thefts and violent attacks on staff members. Of course a few shiheads bitched and moaned about it but it basically eliminated groups of 6 or more people just walking in picking up cases of booze and walking out. Only time its really an issue in around Christmas when it is really busy it may take 10 or 15 minutes to get in to the store but if it cuts down on the theft and it keeps people from ending up in the hospital I don’t have a problem with it.

I have a friend who manages a liquor store and the system also allows them to black list problem customers from every store if they get black listed at one store.

Doing this in Thunder bay, Sioux lookout and Kenora just makes sense, If you’ve ever been to these towns you would know what I mean.

Good. I've seen these people in action. They just don't care and the staff can't do anything.

It sounds a lot like the system we have in Manitoba, not that fast but not bad, they basically put your ID under the scanner and wait for it to check that you aren’t already banned from the stores, they wipe down your id with sanitizer when they take it and give it back. About 1 min per customer, If you go in with a buddy or SO expect to have to scan in separately. Like I said not bad unless it’s really busy.

Last week I Witnessed a young lady stuff bottles under her shirt /pants and proceed to waddle and clang out of the LCBO and high tail it across the street holding her gut like she was about to give birth. At one point, all the product at the LCBO was kept in the back. You had to tell the clerk what you wanted and the clerk would bring it out to you.

Maybe that is what we should go back to.

I have a feeling that if this pilot project becomes adopted widespread, certain groups are going to complain they are being profiled.

I have a feeling that if this pilot project becomes adopted widespread, certain groups are going to complain they are being profiled.

They will complain, as they always do. But if everyone entering the store is subjected to the same procedure, then nobody is being profiled. Maybe that's the way around it.

Yea I wouldn’t doubt it, wouldn’t surprise me if even places like Walmart and grocery stores start doing this as well.

Actually. This is a bigger privacy issue if businesses start scanning our government's id.

It may not just be for security. It would be a marketing goldmine. Potentially used for id theft

We will start to see the same with many other type of stores.

In the US downtown stores, liquor store, drugstore, grocery store pretty much all have a security guard.

When so many people can barely have a roof they result to theft.

They can mail you a catalog. Then you get to clip your favorites and hang it next to your bed, locker, etc. It might be a sign that you're an alcoholic though

Ontario government scraps LCBO pilot project involving IDs

In a statement, Ontario Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy said the government heard several concerns over the planned LCBO pilot.

They should go back to over counter purchases which was fazed out in the 80's and 90's, the only theft was employees theft and staff members were free from customer violence.

FFS! Fine with SHOWING my ID. Pretty ing UNFINE with having it scanned and stored anywhere. Far too many security breaches and even more, misuses of data and I believe this is a privacy violation that will never pass. I rarely drink beer and mostly drink wine and occasionally whiskey, so I can easily cut the LCBO out of my life completely since I live in the Niagara Region. Hopefully the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario or some other suit will put a quick end to this.
