not these guys(ukrainian nazis) again!

Several Jewish advocacy organizations condemned members of Parliament on Sunday for giving a standing ovation to a man who fought for a Nazi unit during the Second World War.

During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Ottawa on Friday, MPs honoured 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, who fought for the First Ukrainian Division, in the House of Commons.

Hunka was invited by Speaker Anthony Rota, who introduced him.

“I am very proud to say that he is from North Bay and from my riding of Nipissing—Timiskaming,” the Ontario MP said.

“He is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service.”

MPs cheered and Zelenskyy raised his fist in acknowledgement as Hunka saluted from the gallery during two separate standing ovations.

The First Ukrainian Division was also known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies issued a statement Sunday saying the division “was responsible for the mass murder of innocent civilians with a level of brutality and malice that is unimaginable.”

“An apology is owed to every Holocaust survivor and veteran of the Second World War who fought the Nazis, and an explanation must be provided as to how this individual entered the hallowed halls of Canadian Parliament and received recognition from the Speaker of the House and a standing ovation,” the statement said.

Rota released a statement late Sunday afternoon saying he recognized an individual in the gallery on Friday, and that he has “subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so.”

“I wish to make clear that no one, including fellow parliamentarians and the Ukraine delegation, was aware of my intention or of my remarks before I delivered them,” he wrote.

“I particularly want to extend my deepest apologies to Jewish communities in Canada and around the world.”

The statement does not make clear what Rota is apologizing for, and it does not name Hunka or give any details about what information Rota learned about him since Friday.

B’nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn said it is beyond outrageous that Parliament honoured a former member of a Nazi unit, saying Ukrainian “ultra-nationalist ideologues” who volunteered for the Galicia Division “dreamed of an ethnically homogenous Ukrainian state and endorsed the idea of ethnic cleansing.”

“We understand an apology is forthcoming. We expect a meaningful apology. Parliament owes an apology to all Canadians for this outrage, and a detailed explanation as to how this could possibly have taken place at the centre of Canadian democracy,” Mostyn said.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, which represents Jewish federations across the country, said it is deeply troubled by the incident.

“Canada’s Jewish community stands firmly with Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression. But we can’t stay silent when crimes committed by Ukrainians during the Holocaust are whitewashed,” the group said in a statement published Sunday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Members of Parliament from all parties rose to applaud Hunka. A spokesperson for the federal Conservatives said the party was not aware of his history at the time.

In a second written statement released late Sunday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre laid the blame at the feet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“No parliamentarians (other than Justin Trudeau) had the opportunity to vet this individual’s past before he was introduced and honoured on the floor of the House of Commons. Without warning or context, it was impossible for any parliamentarian in the room (other than Mr. Trudeau) to know of this dark past,” Poilievre said.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office repeated Rota’s assertion that he alone invited Hunka.

“Parliament and the Speaker’s office is independent from the prime minister and the Prime Minister’s Office,” Mohammad Hussain said in a written statement Sunday.

“The Speaker had his own allotment of guest seating at Friday’s address, which were determined by the Speaker and his office alone.”

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in a statement Sunday evening he also shares concens about “the individual honoured with a standing ovation,” adding, without naming Hunka, that he was not a guest of the party and the NDPs were not aware of his “association with the Nazi regime.”

“This event has caused harm to the Jewish community and for that, I am sorry,” Singh said.

“We must all stand together against the rising tide of antisemitism.”

Monuments to honour the First Ukrainian Division have caused controversy in recent years.

In 2021, a statue of Ukrainian military leader Roman Shukhevych and a monument to the fighters of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division in Edmonton were vandalized by someone who spray painted them with the words “Actual Nazi.”

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center said at the time that it had been advocating for their removal for decades.

In 2020, a monument to the Waffen-SS Galicia Division in Oakville, Ont., was vandalized in a similar way.

The decision to admit Ukrainian immigrants who had served in the SS Waffen Division in the post-war period was contentious, with Jewish groups arguing they should be barred from the country.

The International Military Tribunal in Nuremburg declared the SS to be a criminal organization, including the SS Waffen in that declaration.

The Waffen-SS Galicia Division surrendered to the British army in 1945, and just over 8,000 men were moved to the United Kingdom in 1947.

In 1950, the federal cabinet decided to allow Ukrainians living in the U.K. to come to Canada “notwithstanding their service in the German army provided they are otherwise admissible. These Ukrainians should be subject to special security screening, but should not be rejected on the grounds of their service in the German army.”

In 1985, then-prime minister Brian Mulroney called for a royal commission to examine whether Canada had become a haven for war criminals.

The Deschenes Commission found there were about 600 former members of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division living in Canada at the time. But Justice Jules Deschenes said membership in the division did not itself constitute a war crime.

He was fighting the Red Army, little known chapter in WWII history. Question picking fights with someone who wasn't clearly antisemitic, esp. what, 80 years later?

Long history of Ukrainian-Canadian groups glorifying Nazi collaborators exposed by defacing of Oakville memorial

Long history of Ukrainian-Canadian groups glorifying Nazi collaborators exposed by defacing of Oakville memorial — The Canada Files

Ukranian Nazi collaborators: From working for the Nazis, to crushing the insurgent Canadian left in the 1950s

The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists was founded in 1929. Its fascist and openly anti-Semitic ideology was that Jews and Russian-speaking citizens must be removed from Ukrainian society at any cost. They enthusiastically collaborated with Nazi Germany in the 1940s to exterminate Jews, Russians, and anyone who attempted to protect them. The OUN was only forced out of Ukraine after the USSR took control of the country, upon the end of the Second World War.

The Ukrainian fascists found new homes in Canada, where the ideology of anti-communism was extremely potent. Peter Vronsky, a former documentary Director at the National Film board revealed that:

“a little known US-financed group in Canada called the "Canadian Christian Council for the Resettlement of Refugees" privately lobbied the Canadian government in the 1950s to admit former Nazi Waffen-SS 'foreign legion volunteers' like the Moslem Bosnian-Albanian Nazi SS troopers, Ukrainian SS volunteers, and others, to come to Sudbury wholesale to work in the mines.”

The Jewish News of North California reported that the Canadian government admitted more than 2,000 Ukrainian members of the Nazi 14th SS Division in the 1950s. This was done to crush the burgeoning leftist Ukrainian diaspora that was building up during the previous few years.

One way of getting into postwar Canada "was by showing the SS tattoo," Canadian historian Irving Abella told 60 Minutes interviewer Mike Wallace in 1997. "This proved that you were an anti-Communist."

Canada knowingly failed to report them to Germany, resulting in many of the 1,882 recipients of the German “victim pensions” being Ukranian Nazis living in Canada. Many former Nazis, including suspected war criminals such as Radislav Grujicic, were paid by the RCMP to provide intelligence reports on left-wing immigrants who had recently came to Canada, reported the CBC in 1996.

In 1995, a Toronto Star article exposed that a Canadian mining company, INCO, utilised Ukrainian Nazi collaborators to crush leftist labour organizing in the early 1960s. As a whole, they were crucial in shaping the anti-leftist lean of Canadian unions, resulting in the current centrist and right-wing unions which are being crushed by the bosses today.

Ukrainian-Canadian nationalism: A proud tradition of whitewashing Ukrainian collaboration with the Nazis to this day

In the present day, the Oakville memorial to the Nazi SS Galicia Divison is far from the only memorial honouring Ukrainian Nazi collaborators in Canada. In 2010, the Canadian government authorized a memorial to the “victims of communism” after an aggressive campaign from Tribute to Liberty. This group minimizes Nazi war crimes, in favour of targeting the Soviet Union, which lost 25 million citizens in the fight against fascism, during World War II. The Liberals have continued to support it, even after public outcry forced the monument to be downsized and moved out of its spot near the Supreme Court of Canada.

The “victims of communism” memorial is based on an incompetently sourced database, which even considered Nazis as victims. This concept relies on The Black Book of Communism, which counts Nazicollaborating fascists, anti-Semitic White Army fighters and czarist officers who oversaw genocidal pogroms against Jews in its list of “victims of communism.” Contributors to the book admitted that the book’s editor Stephane Courtois fabricated the numbers to arrive at the much parroted 100 million figure. It also minimizes the horrific crimes of fascism, ignores the deaths under the capitalist economic system, while portraying communism as the greatest threat.

The memorial’s farcical justification is symbolic of the glorification of Ukranian Nazi collaborators in modern day Canada.

Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s former foreign affairs minister, and current Deputy Prime Minister knows all about glorifying Ukrainian Nazi collaborators.

Chrystia Freeland & neo-Nazi glorifying Ukrainian-Canadian groups in modern day Canada

Freeland is also deeply connected with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the League of Ukranian Canadians (LUC), which glorify the fascist Union of Ukranian Nationals group and Ukranian Nazi collaborators. The UCC considers the fascist nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, the fascist political and military leader of the Bandera faction of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, OUN, as one of Ukraine’s greatest national heroes. They both honour Yaroslav Stetsko, Bandera’s right-hand man, who stated in his 1941 autobiography:

“I therefore support the destruction of the Jews and the expedience of bringing German methods of exterminating Jewry to Ukraine, barring their assimilation and the like."

Its like JT is on a mission to piss off as many different constituency voters as possible.
He scored pretty big points with Ukrainian-Canadians though.

And most Jewish Canadians will vote for him over PeePee. So I don't see your point.

My great grandparents emigrated from a little Jewish community just outside of Kiev to Saskatchewan in 1895. Even back then it wasn't a great idea to be a Jew in Ukraine. Although rather poor, they still left whatever they had to leave Ukraine and come to a safer place without any real knowledge of what to expect when they arrived.

One of my great-grandfathers found Saskatchewan to be not conducive to his religious orthodoxy, and went back to Ukraine, where he was promptly murdered by Ukrainians a year later.

Growing up in Winnipeg I soon found out that Poles and Ukrainians were very anti-semitic. When I first moved to Montreal in 1972, and saw young Jewish men wearing Stars Of Davids and Chais openly I thought to myself "you guys are gonna get killed", until I discovered that anti-semitism among the French was much more hidden and subtle.

Anti-Semitism has deep roots in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.

If anybody had told my great-grandparents that Ukraine would someday have a Jewish President, they would have thought that person was out of his or her mind!

The speaker has already stated that it was his call alone and JT didn't meet with the veteran.
Not that it'll stop the cons from lying about it.

Video shows BOTH sides of the house of commons applauding including the oppostition leader.
Does this mean that everyone there should appologize?
Put aside the history of the Galacia unit because many don't know the actual history of the unit..

It's obvious this old Nazi's background was unknown to almost all participants in the applause. The only people at fault are those who actually knew, or who failed in their due diligence in researching his background and historical wartime activities.

Yes, and it also means that nobody should applaud anyone else until they've done a thorough background search on them.

Well, isn't that the job of JT's office to do that??
No, the speaker and prime ministers office are two seperate entities.
The speakers office acts independently and the speaker was able to invite his own allotment of guests witout notifying other members of parliament.
It seems you and Poilievre studied the procedures of the Canadian parliament from the same twitter account.
Here is what he said.
""No parliamentarians (other than Justin Trudeau) had the opportunity to vet this individual’s past before he was introduced and honoured on the floor of the House of Commons. Without warning or context, it was impossible for any parliamentarian in the room (other than Mr. Trudeau) to know of this dark past,"

And who's job is that? Somehow you think the PM's office should also do their due diligence on the matter and not rely everything to other people...this has become the norm for JT's office now...relying intel on someone....

Sure, start with the orange guy and 'good people on both sides', continue to bud plug and his support of white supremacists and then carry on with all those who support the J6/proud boys, oath keepers coup.
Then, once you've gotten them all to all apologize for supporting white supremacist/neo nazis you can talk about how the speaker didn't properly vet one vet.
