A team with world class strikers like Alex Morgan, Sophie Smith, Trinity Rodman and Lynn Williams scored just one goal against Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden. And their futility was on full display during the penalty shoot out. Megan Rapinoe and Sophie Smith only had to convert one of their penalties to send them to the knock out round. Neither could do it. This is why the US is (deservedly) going home. Adios.
Watching the penalty shootout reminded me when the NHL first introduced it to decide ties, and some players didn't take it seriously and just went through the whole motion like they didn't want to get picked. Some missed the net and some never even got a shot off because they skated too close and the goalie grabbed the puck. In the NBA, Rodman used to shoot free throws half assed until Jordan set him straight.
Most goalies are let's say 5'6", and they usually dive left or right depending on the shooter. The shooter usually blasts the ball left or right and sometimes dead center. But the shooters who are trying to be too perfect aim for the 6 to 7 foot mark above the goalie, just under the bar. Result, blasts over the cross bar. Come on man, my grandmother could hit the net with her off foot in her house robe holding her cup of tea. . UGH !

Left footers shoot mostly to their left, right footers mostly to their right. Goalkeepers know this. So if its on the ground, possibility of a save is relatively high.
The best penalty is a little high either direction.. But it takes a lot of practice to ensure it doesnt fly over the bar.

It must be environment, Huitema is a Cover Girl from Vancouver, Tancredi was a Junkyard Dog from Hamilton. Football came of age in this country at the 2012 London Olympics, we missed a chance at the gold medal due to incompetent officiating. Tancredi was the center forward, her role was to hold up defenders to create space for the support forwards - usually Christine. Since she retired no other player has come close to punishing defenders like she did.

Even in woman soccer gk are usually quite tall. Have you played competitive? The difficulty of such penalty shoot out is not the kick. Its the stress of missing. Hard to explain but that anxiety before such a kick can make you miss something you would succeed 49 times out of 50...
