Should we halt Immigration until we can get it under control.

You know what would help?
Putting the rent control back that DoFo cut.
Putting the minimum wage increase back that DoFo killed.
If anything, it's the newer buildings that should have rent controls because they don't require as much maintennace as an older building. Keeping controls on older buildings likely encourages landlords to skimp on vital maintenance and renovict people when it becomes too costly.

Or apply rent controls to all units instead of some having it and others not.

I think you are overstating issues.

Firstly, Ukraine is another debate.
too funny, you claim he overstates & the first thing you do is ring fense the discussion

But we are part of NATO and as part of NATO we have commitments towards NATO and implicitly towards security in Europe. So yes, we do owe our part in supporting Ukraine. There is also the moral debate about whether to support a country being attacked and invaded by a rogue nation like Russia. I think we should.
the Russian / Ukraine conflict dates back 500 years & is far more complicated than you will ever know
Putin bad ?? no doubt
Ukraine. clean as grannys nightie ? No

But, what do you mean we have so little to show for? We have free healthcare which the Americans dont.Which by itself is huge. We have cheaper medication.
Our free health care is not sustainable
demographics , utilization rates , medical inflation well in excess of cpi for decades and a mountain of govt debt will ensure the demise of free health care
likely just when you need it the most

Justin also greatly expanded the taxpayer dollars that go to McKinsey. I'm sure some of them are on this board, and contributing to the ladies' financial independence.

That may help, but where we are right now, stopping this open door immigration by the feds until things catch up will definitely help.

Rent control is a staggering bad idea and the strong it is, the worse the effects.
Based on both reality and theory.

There are alternatives that could drastically improve the situation, but I guess it's better to fuck around in the market and when said market fails, blame it on market failure and not the government action and bring in more regulation which...

Take off rent controls and there would be an immediate massive rent jump.

Actually immigration IS under control. The government has set a target and is apparently meeting it. Do you think that Trudeau just pulled the figure out of his ass one day?..... No. It was worked out by his economic advisors in consultation with business. And of course the pension experts.

The # of immigrants = the number of new people to keep the economy and pension plan afloat, since Canadians aren't replacing themselves due to low birth rate.

The problem is that the # of housing starts doesn't keep up with population growth. Therefore, housing price inflation occurs in more desirable locations. I don't like that either. But housing price inflation is only one aspect of the economy. If you froze the # of immigrants at 0 for 20 years to force Toronto housing prices down, then you would bust the rest of the economy.

Did he say that he wants to abolish rent controls immediately? I certainly hope not because that would be a staggeringly bad idea. Major changes to rent control, immigration, etc have to be very well thought out, carefully monitored and done over the course of years or even decades. So many people here seem to think they can fix these problems just by slowing or stopping immigration. It simply does not work like that because immigration is just one of many overlapping issues. All of them need to be tackled at the same time. The same applies for the private sector where pushing through major changes haphazardly seldom works.

There's been so much talk about immigration yet I don't think anyone talked about how the system actually works. I include myself as I'm Canadian born. Specifically, how the Comprehensive Ranking System or points system works in theory and in reality. I can only conclude that most people here are Canadian born and have no idea what it's like to go through the system and how it's supposed to work. We need to know the system in detail to have an intelligent discussion about this.

The CRS system prioritizes Age, Language Ability, Education and Work Experience. The biggest factor that impacts CRS score is your age and language ability. Those are the core human capital factors for maximum of 500 points.

There are others like Spousal or Common Law factors, skill transferability and certain job codes (you have to choose a NOC code based on your experience).
Thanks for the info. Now hopefully someone out there can speak to how the process works in practice and where it needs improvement.

Ford cut everything except pet projects for his donors.
He cut education and healthcare and spent money on a new highway between his donors, selling the greenbelt to donors, the ontario place spa.

He spent $230 million cutting new renewables but now finds that they are actually the cheapest so is starting to redo those contracts.
Don’t they all do shit like that. Want me to list baziollion things McGuinty/Wynne did to land us in this Shyte hole? Let’s start with throwing Tom’s and Tom’s of money at Teachers and friends for their support. Let’s go to gas plants, and so very much more. Wind farms…or are you ok with those because they aren’t in your backyard….

Or have you forgotten All that? Have you forgotten Don Drummond, a very left wing economist they cherry picked betting he’d be “kind”…..

Whatever he’s done, he’s still not even close…Domt get me wrong. I’m not defending Ford. I’m calling a spade a spade. Maybe you and many others should look in the mirror for keeping those idiots in power for 13 years……

just saying.

That said Mandrill.
just like there’s right wing economist like Jack Mintz, there’s left wing economist like Don Drummond. I do follow a few still, both left and right wing. We used to have a saying. Sit 4 economist at a table, give them data and a scenario. You’ll get 6 different answers

As I said way back, maybe the question should be “how many per year”…..for the past 20 years or so, that number has been around 200,000. So the same logic applies…if many strategists who certainly knew we needed them…..and why were comfortable inching up from I think 160,000 back around 2000.

None of us
have the data required to even begin to settle on a number. Or expertise….What we can assume is that doubling it all of a sudden, when for the past 20 years, it had been inching up…..but what really pisses me off. If I could see this coming back around 2008……why the F couldn’t they.???

Why couldn’t they start building infrastructure elsewhere, do what they had to to keep industry and jobs in other parts of the country….create jobs in other parts of the province/country…you know. Diversity?????

well, there’s a shit tonne of seats in the GTA. Where elections are won or lost.

Prime example.
They are killing Alberta……but when GM threatened to close a plant in Oshawa…oh they ( Both Ford and Trudeau) were fast to cry crocodile tears in the press and ride to the rescue..

Small town Ontario driven to its knees 2003-2010? Still begging for the time of day. And on the topic of economies, tax revenue. There are things called local economies….Guess what happens when a major plant that employs say 25-30% of a small towns population closes….well the municipality loses a shit tonne of tax revenue.has to raise land taxes, or cut services….the waitress who used to get tips from plant employees…..I don’t recall which town it was exactly. Maybe Goderich. They hiked land taxes 26% so they could pay the OPP. You guys whine about tolls on the 407-412/418..and Ford kills them. I’ll go even further ( could also again mention Hydro or Carbon taxes)

you all, drive to your cottages, on highways, paid for by everyone….don’t understand why locals hate you…..think your all that, throwing money around…,money you just would not have, if the gta hadn’t been “built”…by everyone.

All this whining about the homeless, junkies the cost of rent/housing, grid lock, building on green spaces and more.

You all, have no-one to blame but yourselves. For that, and just how much you are hated by the rest of the country.

have you heard me say it’s “Trudeau’s” fault?
or just one parties fault?

That said. What I can blame Trudeau for are things like killing the energy sector out West. Throwing gas, on inflationary pressures spending so much, bring ing in Carbon Taxes. When most people are feeling the pinch, whether in cites where you don’t put as many KM per year on vehicles, have access to Public transit, have far cheaper Hydro, Nat Gas, and not oil or propane or rural Canada?

etc

And just where exactly are elections won or lost?????

There you go folks. A 4 line accounting of your taxes on an escort review board. Classic Laruesian Economics! 😂
Classic deflection from the truth
i neve claimed this was an exhaustive list of the Liberals waste
that would take up more bandwidth than this board has available

I was meaning to convey that rich people would not want to come to Canada. I mean why would they? They could buy more with the money outside, live in warmer climates and so on. So when you look at prospective immigrants we have to look at people who are educated, young and will stay here as citizens long term. That was the point of my post that when it comes to immigration we should not focus on money immigrants have in their bank accounts. No guarantees that they would invest or even care about benefitting Canada.

Would you say the same thing about Canadians retiring in Latin American countries?
stop the cap...you said yourself if you have 5m you will move back to India...so why are you here?
