That was so fucking stupid how he got in trouble for that. All he did was ask a logical question that pissed Cito off. Cito basically refused to answer the question so Wilner was the one that got in trouble for it.
And remember, Cito also had problems with Bob McCown and Steve Simmons. In fact, at one point I think there was a threat of legal action against one of them.

If anyone remembers Fergie Oliver…. this guy was the worst of all time. He also hosted a TV show called Just Like Mom. “ how about those blue jays” was his famous catchphrase. Rumours circulated about how he is some undercover creep, and he vanished off the face of the year for the last last 30 plus years.

He called the final out on the 1985 AL east clincher.

Haha I remember Fergie the clown. Awful.

My Lord. Fergie Olver is a memory - a bad one. A cringy one. Never liked the guy. I remember when the Jays first appeared the play by play crew on CBC (this was long before Sportsnet existed - and I think for the first few seasons they usually only televised one game a week - the baseball equivalent of HNIC basically) was Don Chevrier and Tony Kubek. I loved Kubek; didn't think Chevrier was a particularly good baseball broadcaster - I'm not sure he knew the game all that well or cared much for it, although he stayed on the Jays crew for a long time.)

I think my favourite Toronto broadcaster of all time was Tom Cheek - a consummate professional and very knowledgeable about the game. But for the first few years he was paired with Early Wynn - who told great stories but was a lousy broadcaster. Joe Bowen for the Leafs a close second in my books.

People mentioned Don Cherry. I didn't watch HNIC to hear his political rants about everything under the sun. He had a good hockey background and should have stuck to that, although he had some weird takes at times (didn't he once say that Frederik Andersen was the best goalie in the NHL) and was from a bygone era in the sport - an era that for better or worse (depending on your perspective) is long gone.
Agree with you about Kubek. I learned more about baseball from him than from anyone else. As a kid I started following baseball in 1975. Kubek would be the colour commentator on the NBC game of the week(Saturday) with Joe Garagiola. Later, he would be the colour commentator with the Blue Jay broadcasts(Wednesdays and Sundays). So, in the Toronto market we were lucky enough to hear him 3 times a week.

Agree with you about Cherry. Enjoyed his commentary regarding hockey, not so much regarding political and social issues even if I agreed with him. I did appreciate his patriotism.

Oh I remember that too. The funny part was, the question that Wilner asked Cito really exposed just how bad of a Manager he was. Yeah he got the two WS championships with Toronto, but there was a reason he struggled so bad to get another manager position. It's because he sucked!!! The question Wilner asked was something like why didn't he pinch run for a slow guy who got on base in the bottom of the nineth. Something every other manager in the league would have done. I mean Cito was sort of a players manager and maybe guys played harder for him that's why he had success, but the bone head shit he would do (or wouldn't like the one Wilner exposed him on) is the reason he couldn't get another manager job after winning two WS which is almost unheard of.

I was an Expos fan. Dave Van Horne was excellent on radio or tv. Shulman is ok, good voice tone, a little too much on the laughing about things. Buck is too loud and only criticizes catchers. Joe Siddall is very good and should replace Buck next year. Caleb Joseph really good. What is it though about these two third string catchers becoming experts? Maybe I am in the minority, but I could not stand Pat Tabler..not even a little bit.

Matty D and Jack make watching even a bad basketball game entertaining.

Before the Expos, I listened to Tiger games on radio. Ernie Harwell was perfect.....that foul ball was caught by a fan from Ann Arbor.

The same reason so many catchers become managers. They are involved in more aspects of the game than any other position and as such learn more about the game. Pitch selection/sequence, infield defence, the running game, hitters strengths and weaknesses etc., etc.

Buck is extremely knowledgeable and waaay more interesting than Siddall and Joseph.

I used to like Jerry Howarth. A really, really nice man. Cheek may have been a good play by play man but he was an asshole.

we'd take our kids on road trips to Detroit to see the Jays play
I am doing this exact thing next week. I am also seeing the Jays in LA at the end of July.

I am a baseball nerd, what can I say?

I always heard about this, and I thought it was an exaggeration… but holy shit it’s unbelievable what they used to do and the questions they would ask children. I can’t believe this guy Fergie Olver was a Toronto Blue Jays sportscaster ….in fact in the mid-80s he was pretty much the voice of the Blue Jays.

how about those blue jays
I understand game show hosts kissing contestants in the 70s and 80s and I remember Bob Barker doing it. And we all know Bob is not a creep (SARCASIM) but this Fergie stuff with children is peculiar and bizarre.

Don't care for:
Ron MaClean.....He's a lying weasel who can't be trusted.
Jeff Blair..........It's funny when Kevin Barker puts him in his place. Dude's got a face for radio.
Jennifer Botterill....An equity hire that has no idea about the pro game.
Jay Onrait...His act has worn thin over the years.

Enjoy immensely:
Dan Shulman ....He's the quintessential play by play man.
Nick Kypreos.....When him and Doug McLean converse it's pure gold.
Jennifer Hedger..True professional if there ever was one.
Evanka Osmak....Something about her enthusiasm and raspy voice.
Stephen Brunt....His intelligence shines through.
Paul Jones.....Great insight on the Raptors broadcasts

On the fence with:
Buck Martinez.....Supposedly he's a great guy in person but he's really guarded with criticizing the home team.
joe Bowen..........Pure homer but is an institution here.
Eric Smith.........Doesn't seem credible sometimes.
Holy fuck…I agree with almost everything ^^^

Joe Siddall was a long-time farmhand for the Expos and played a couple of years for the Tigers. Prior to him being suggested for his job by the great Jerry Howarth, he was a batting practice pitcher for Tigers. He hit the first home run at Comerica Park. Caleb Joseph played in he Baltimore system with a few cups of coffee with the big club. Both were long-time minor leaguers and both, like Buck Martinez, were catchers. Agreed, catchers make the best managers and broadcast colour commentators.

Jeff Blair is awful. Besides the interrupting he thinks knows everything about anything.

David Amber sucks too. All he does is make captain obvious statements.

Jen Botterill is another that says the most obvious things, plus her delivery and lack of charisma are painful to watch.

I'm getting tired of Elliotte Friedman as well. Now that he's an "insider" he's pretty full of himself.

Jay Onrait. Does anyone actually like his stupid act?

I do think most of the female hosts on both networks are pretty damn good though (Jennifer Hedger, Laura Diakun, Lindsay Hamilton, Tessa Bonhomme, Kara Wagland, Sara Davis, Martine Gaillard, Evanka Osmak, Danielle Michaud). TSN has the hotter roster in my opinion.

Speaking of Bob McCowan, he just had another stoke and I think is still in hospital. Can't move one side of his body.
