Seriously, there's hundreds of articles and videos out there on it. If you need hand holding at this stage, I don't think OP will be able to find much on the dark web once they're on.
Before you do that get a VPN. Anything that you access can probably check be traced back to you otherwise.

TL;DR: Student wanted to avoid exam. Emails bomb threat to school. But he used TOR browser through schools WiFi.
It aint all that unless you know where to go. I tried many moons ago and it was difficult to navigate.

Step 1 is to download the TOR browser and then you will find all the guides there - https://www.torproject.org/download/
And there has been cases where subpoena is sent to the VPN provider as well. Retail VPNs are no longer the 'anonymity' provider as they used to be. It will probably save you from a WiFi scanner but not from LE
yes, accessing it is not illegal, but however you might come across few websites which might indulged in illegal stuff, and unless you don't interact with them, you should be ok.
Did it without a VPN a few years ago, just be careful what you click and even then it was insanely wild to see the titles of some of those links. I made sure my mouse pointer didn't hover over any of the real crazy shit, I was that freaked out. lol

Drugs, guns, weapons, counterfeit merchandise/money, "slaves", human trafficking - the page I visited was a very basic page with a black background, no animated gifs or banners, just links with the description of what you would click.

I'm not sure this is true. Many VPN's still have a no log policy, so your information won't be there.
Always makes me laugh when someone comes on a site this and someone says "I need help getting on the dark web". In reality what they're saying is "I want to do something illegal, can someone help me out with that?" lol
