Am I getting weaker or are jar lids getting tighter?

Are lids getting much harder to open lately?

  • Yes, they have. My strength has not changed much, but they are now much harder to open.

  • No, it's only because I've gotten older and weaker. The jars are the same, but I am struggling more.

It seems that lately I can't open jars anymore. I have to run them under hot water to make them expand, and then use a towel to grip. Without doing that, it's impossible. I'm 47, but when i was 20 I never had an issue. Even until recently. I don't think I'm that much weaker.

Is it just me, or are the lids getting harder to open?

I'm fed up with struggling to open lids. I found this:

Lids are now put on by machines, that is why they are so tight.

I also have problems with "kid proof" lids so I usually ask a kid to open those. Kids can open anything.
Haven't they always been put on by machines though? Are the machines calibrated differently now? Seems so.

If its the kind of lids on jam jars, then what I do is stick a butter knife under the lid where it is thicker, and give it a slight nudge, which allows air in, making it easy to open. If not the vacuum seals is really tight its impossible to open.

You slip the tip of the knife between the glass and the lid and twist gently until you hear the pop. That brakes the seal and the jar can be opened by a 5 year old. If you're using the whole content at the same time, poke the top of the lid with a knife- that also breaks the seal and releases the lid.

Wrap a thick rubber band around the jar lid to get a better grip.

Run hot water on the lid for a while, it'll expand the lid away from jar threads

We buy cashews in a jar. They increased the size of the mouth of the jar so now the lid is so huge it is almost impossible to get a grip on the lid.
I was eating a lot of sauerkraut a while ago....Good luck opening that jar. Wholly man!

Hot water and a rubber placemat used for grip..Even then it was a chore.

I remember when women folk would just automatically give me what needed to be opened when I was in close proximity.Miss those days.

Don't tell anybody but I just ask one of the young staff guys inside the store to loosen the lid for me.

Since I normally open them with hammers, they have always been easy to open. Wrong way?

Strangely, my right-handed grip is stronger than my left-handed grip.....and I'm right-handed.....

I wonder why?????
