Both O'Reilly and Acciari are UFA's at the end of the season. O'Reilly won't be resigned but Acciari could be.
Overall I like the deal we didn't have to part with any of our top prospects or current rostered players.

Best case scenario this turns out to be a trade mirrors the Butch Goring deal. Only problem is our goaltending and defence corp are far inferior to what the Islanders had back then.

O'Reilly is prone to injury too but that comes with the type of game he plays, heavy and laying out the body. I don't think Boston wants to disrupt the locker room chemistry so they won't make any major moves.
For sure the Boston team is already stacked. They really have no holes or weaknesses. They have Hall and Coyle on their 3rd line and Foligno looks to be playing on the 4th line.

Some people think all first round picks are equal. There's a huge difference between top 5 first round and late first round.
Same people don't understand the go for it window and the build window.
It's not like Leafs are trading their 1st pick every year. They didn't last year. Only one other year when they won the Canadian Division.
Once Matthews and Nylander contracts end and if one or both jump ship then they can build again with draft picks.
Winning a round would probably be considered a success. That's how low the bar is.
Certainly agree with your take on not all first rounders alike - a 15th pick is not even close to a 5th pick.... much less a 25-30th pick which is another below those two. Reminds me when people here argued that a late first the Leafs received in the Kaberle to Bosotn deal made up for one of the 2nd and 10th overall they ended up giving for Kessel. They were not even close to similar value.

Instead of windows, I go with the franchise success cycle concept - similar thoughts really - this is the time the Leafs have to move nnn critical assets for improvements that they believe are better than marginal.

In terms of the Leafs only trading away first rounders twice -- they also traded their 2022 1st for a 2nd (to clear cap). And they traded their 2019 1st to clear cap (getting rid of Marleau). So in the last 5 years they will only have had one first. Again, arguably worth the risk.

Thanks for clarifying the other 1st rounders they lost. Marleau wasn't acquired by Dubas so I suppose one could pin that on Lou.
Trading the 25th pick for Chicago's 38th pick to get rid of Mrazek (2 years) was actually considered a good trade by Dubas although it was Dubas who originally acquired him so he in effect had to fix his own mistake.

This is interesting. The Leafs now have two captains. JT the official captain and now O'Reilly.

Don’t forget Gio
Yes, Leafs can't complain about a lack of leadership anymore.

P.S. My favourite captain was Shea Weber. He would staple you to the boards if you took liberties with any of his players.

My favourite was Bobby Clarke…he’d spear you in the throat for the puck and the rest of the Flyers would beat the shit out of you if you retaliate.

not always sure...
The leafs now have a chance being eliminated second round.
Getting to the second round would be the equivalent of winning the Stanley Cup, because last year the team was quite delighted with just "getting more respect in the handshake line" as the players headed to the golf course.
The Leafs ordered championship rings to commemorate getting more respect so getting past the first round would be a whole new level of success for this franchise.

FFA is really excited by this. Obviously he sees O'Reilly as having the similar type of impact that renowned Hall of Famer Guy Carbonneau had on the Dallas Stars.

Ryan O’Reilly has already had a better career than Carbonneau…I wonder if O’Reilly will make the Hall of Fame.

I had speculated on this on a HOF thread from a year or so back. He has the Selke, Byng, and Conn Smythe trophies - even with modest stats that trio of trophies could be enough to get him some consideration in a year with a down class.

As a negative to O'Reilly though, he has made nowhere near the same impact as Bob Gainey.
