I am a big vinyl collector and my collection has made quite a dent in my wallet over the years. I love thrifting to find albums but usually end up buying them full price because it can be really hit or miss what you find second hand. The thrill of finding a good one in a big bin though.... *shivers*

I'm interested to hear what everyone's collections look like and what your top 10 vinyl are. I'm going to think on it today and post my top 10.

Likewise mate - big time collector as well. Always hit these vinyl shows when I can (see Vibrations Link). Top 10 would be hard - My number 1 is easy though - first vinyl I ever got through my Toronto Sun paper route at the tender age of 12.

That's very cool! I'm 30, so unfortunately I don't have any Interesting origin stories to any of my vinyl. A lot of my fave albums (Beatles, bowie, etc) I found at expensive shops. I did find a couple Elton John albums second hand out in the wild.

I give my mom shit every once in awhile that she got rid of all her vinyl 😂 We have very similar musical tastes, that would have been a gold mine for me.

I don’t stream or subscribe to anything. I make it a point to listen to vinyl all the time. What I love most about vinyl is the expense and inconvenience lol
This made me laugh out loud. It's impossible to defend my vinyl collection to people, I can't argue with them when they mention the cost and inconvenience and superior sound quality with streaming. They. Just. Don't. Get. It.

I'm actually looking for Frank Zappa - Hot Rats in the wild. I'm not a huge Zappa fan but I love Peaches in Regalia. I've never been lucky enough to find any Grateful Dead either.

All of my vinyl LPs were ruined in 1998 when the shower in my apartment leaked.

Between 1984 and 1989, I collected 45 rpm singles from 1970-74 to create a Mix Tape of AM radio music from my youth, (I was 8-13 when the songs came out). I used to check The Vinyl Museum and Kopps Records regularly, looking for very specific singles. I haven't played vinyl in 30+ years, but I still have these originals, (without picture sleeve) among others:

Ringo Starr - Photograph b/w Down and Out
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song b/w Hey Hey What can I Do
Melanie - Brand New Key b/w Some Say (I Got Devil)
The Guess Who - Hand Me Down World b/w Runnin' Down the Street
Rare Earth - Get Ready b/w Magic Key
The Spinners - How Could I Let You Get Away b/w I'll be Around
The Stylistics - You Are Everything b/w Country Living
Mashmakhan - As the Years Go By b/w Days When We Are Free
Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Let it Ride b/w Tramp
Jim Croce - You Don't Mess Around with Jim b/w Photographs and Memories
Maria Muldaur - Midnight at the Oasis b/w Any Old Time
Cher - Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves b/w He'll Never Know
The New Seekers featuring Eve Graham - Look What They've Done to My Song, ma b/w A Beautiful Day
Rod Stewart - Handbags and Gladrags b/w Man of Constant Sorrow
Pagliaro - Some Sing, Some Dance b/w Magic Moments

Others: (Picture Sleeves)

Ian Dury - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll b/w Razzle in My Pocket
Bruce Springstone - (Meet the Flintstones)/ Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Geraldine Fibbers - Dragon Lady b/w Birthday Boy

Notes:

Razzle in My Pocket is really funny, the story of a boy caught shoplifting a skin magazine. The YouTube video would be blocked from forum links, (it's just the song with a slideshow of covers from old UK men's magazines).

Dragon Lady: I bought this 45 at the Horseshoe Tavern, where I saw Geraldine Fibbers in 1997 or 1998, (really bad sound; I couldn't hear the vocals for the entire show). I had a beer with the band's drummer, who was sitting at a table before the show. No one else recognized him, but I had seen the video for Dragon Lady when it played twice on MuchMusic.

This video is my rip, from TV -> SP VHS -> MPEG, but someone else uploaded it. If you ever see a music video on YouTube with the City Limits logo, It was made by me.

Geraldine Fibbers is not a person; the band is named after the Flip Wilson character. The singer is Carla Bozulich, and sorry, guys, she's a lesbian.

yeah the Zappa catalogue is DEEP to say the least. You can almost always find a Zappa record but is it the Zappa era and lineup you prefer? Regarding the grateful dead…..be careful lol their live Music is where it’s at but some of those shows are 7-12 LPs, constant flipping, 45+ minute jams split across 3 or 4 sides of records lol also they’re rare and cost a fortune unless you bought it upon initial release. Furthurmore (lol), if you do find grateful dead vinyl it’s likely a studio album and it’s likely from the 1980s or very late 1970s and it’ll turn you off immediately. Try to stay within 1966 and 1974 for studio Albums lol

There is a TON of Grateful Dead music on archive(dot)org, much of it steaming only, but some is downloadable. Sift through this link, if you're curious:

hell yeah I know all about archive and the Relisten app!
I'm not a fan of The Grateful Dead, but I have downloaded some great audio by Billy Bragg and G Love and Special Sauce from archive. I download a lot of video from there; everything is supposed to be public domain, but a lot of it isn't. At one time, DVD rips of every movie by Russ Myer were available there, but they've all since been removed.

I stupidly sold most of my vinyl collection over several years in the late 80's to early 90's. I also lent some records and never got them back. I have maybe 30 left in my collection. My goal over the next few years is to rebuild my collection to at least 200 of my favorites, and as much original as I can. This is basically what remains of my original stuff

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill and Paul's Boutique LP's
Run DMC - Raising Hell LP
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Yo Bum Rush the Show LP's
NWA - Straight Outta Compton LP
Sir Mix a Lot - Swass LP
Bobby Brown - Don't Be Cruel LP
Whitney Houston debut LP
Prince - Purple Rain LP
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me LP
Wham! - Make It Big LP
INXS - Kick LP
J. Geils Band - Freeze Frame LP (first vinyl I ever owned)
Billy Squier - Don't Say No LP
Van Halen - 1984 LP
The Cult - Electric LP
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold LP
MC Hammer - Pump It Up (Here's the News) 12" remixes
Son of Bazerk - Change the Style 12" single
Eric B. & Rakim - Don't Sweat the Technique 12" remixes
DJ Chuck Chillout and Kool Chip - Rhythm is the Master 12" single
Chaka Khan - I Feel For You 7" single
De La Soul - Potholes in My Lawn 12" single
Steve "Silk" Hurley - Work It Out 12" remixes
Eazy-E - We Want Eazy 12" remixes
Christopher Williams- Every Little Thing U Do 12" remixes

The last couple of years I added Showbiz & AG's Runaway Slave LP as well as the Best of DJ Fast Eddie 2LP.

Albums sold/lost/damaged over the years

The worst has to be Michael Jackson's Thriller. I still can't believe I sold this at a garage sale for a few bucks. I also lent my prized Schoolly D album to a friend at school and within a couple weeks he moved away. Haven't been able to find a replacement since.

Other notables:

Beat Street soundtrack
Krush Groove soundtrack
Janet Jackson - Control
Love and Laughter - I Surrender 12" remixes (lent to a work colleague and he got fired the next week)
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Rush - Moving Pictures
Duran Duran - Rio and Seven and the Ragged Tiger
Hall & Oates - H2O
Huey Lewis & the News- Sports!
Supertramp - Famous Last Words
Men at Work - Business As Usual
Samantha Fox - Touch Me (bought in the UK)
Culture Club - Kissing to be Clever
Billy Ocean - Suddenly
Karyn White - Karyn White debut LP
Jody Watley - Jody Watley debut LP
DeBarge - Rhythm of the Night

Lotsa things to think about

I have 5 working turntables in the house connected to various stereo rigs.

Lots of vinyl of mid 70's to late 80's pop, modest rock.

Broadway/West End original cast and Hollywood musical albums 50's to 90's

Growing collection of London Records Phase 4 releases, from the early 60's to mid 70's. These I hunt for. Some of the earliest multitrack recordings

About 3' long of shelf space of 45 rpm singles releases dating from mid 50's to late 80's. Some from wife and I bought from new, and a lot bought as lots for a song at estate auctions.

I could not hope to narrow all this down to a top 10.

My collection is heavy on the Frank Zappa, grateful dead, Beethoven, and Jimi Hendrix with plenty of obscure psychedelic rock and jazz recorded by mostly dead black artists
I still have a number of Zappa records on LP.

I made a poster once of the Beatles Sgt Peppers and the Mothers "We're Only in it For the Money" album covers.

Zappa had so many different phases in his career. My favorite ones were the mid 70's when he released Apostrophe, Overnight Sensation, Zoot Allures, Bongo Fury, One Size Fits all, etc. Though I did enjoy Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti and You are What you is. I have some of his early stuff like Freak Out, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Uncle Meat and Hot Rats, however I have to be on the mood to listen to them.

Zappa is an acquired taste as some of my friends and exes hated his music. He was an amazing guitarist/musician and composer.

Great album!

I remember when Blizzard of Oz came out. That album took the world by storm.

The first LP I remember as a kid was purchasing Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. I still enjoy listening to that album and spent hours looking at the cover and the booklets.

I may have some of those colored LP's. I had the red LP Hemispheres by Rush and the yellow LP Pieces of Eight by Styx.

Albums were pieces of Art.

I think I still have a couple of those "Greatest Album Covers" books, which are cool to look at.
