I remember watching a show on elephants where some mild mannered bespectacled guy was doing a study on a herd for a year or so. They all became comfortable with him being around to the point where a mother elephant brought her young calf over to greet him. Moment of trust. Better than killing them.

I've seen so many videos of elephants showing affection and humanity. For instance on twitter yesterday a man helped get a baby elephant freed that was stuck in the mud on an embankment. The elephant was so grateful he/she showed appreciation by patting the man on his shoulder. Makes me think they would make great house pets if it weren't for their size. Majestic creatures.

These are Asian elephants. I wonder if African Elephants are as agreeable to humans.

When an elephant wants a drink, you don't tell him he's had too many.

I've seen so many videos of elephants showing affection and humanity. Seems like a bit of a misnomer. Humanity as applied to humans is their biggest problem.

You don't, trees grow out of their poop.

Very different video from the first one. The females are saying "what are you doing here"...then Big Popa shows up.

These are African elephants. Big Popa is the matriarch of the family.

Super Dave and his pal Simba.
I have - late in life - come to the opinion that animals should NEVER be put in ZOO's or used for entertainment purposes.

An elephant never forgets... so don't piss them off!
I read about one recently that trampled on some woman's body in a funeral or something like that.
I wonder what she did.

I can recommend a very readable book called : "Water for Elephants"
