Raccoon to blame for massive power outage in midtown Toronto and Scarborough, says Hydro One

A raccoon is to blame for a power outage Friday evening that affected midtown Toronto and Scarborough, according to Hydro One.

The utility provider told the Star that raccoon came into contact with electrical equipment at its Ellesmere transmission station, causing the power outage.

According to Hydro One spokesperson Meghan Collie, the raccoon died following the incident. “The equipment that they came into contact with is pretty high voltage.”

Toronto Hydro said all power has been restored.

In an update, the company said a loss of supply from Hydro One, Ontario’s major electricity transmission provider, was behind the outages.

Dozens of Torontonians took to Twitter to report sweeping electricity outages near their locations across the northern and easters parts of the city.

Users reported outages ranging from Bathurst in the west, to Bayview, and starting from St. Clair to as far north as York Mills. Toronto Hydro said approximately 40,000 users were affected at the peak of the outage.

Earlier Friday, more than five thousand customers were in a virtual queue to report an outage on the Toronto Hydro website, according to screenshots shared on social media.

Street lights and traffic lights were also out in many areas, according to reports.

“Treat intersections as a 4 way stop if traffic signals are out,” Toronto police reminded in a tweet.

While all power should be restored, the Toronto Hydro spokesperson said anyone with outstanding problems could report their issues.

Social media users had wondered about the impact of a light pole that was knocked over by a truck near Yonge Street and Hillsdale Avenue, seriously injuring a woman.
