IMO, World Vision (the one where you sponsor an impoverished child) is one of those scam charities. They have a beautiful office building in Mississauga on World Drive (likely named for them.) I used to work in that area and remember seeing a few nice Benz's in the parking lot.
Sometimes a few of the senior staff of some charities will attend a conference about global homelessness, held in February, in the Bahamas.

I mentioned this story in a previous thread. When I was working in my last job, I would go daily to a Tim Hortons that was adjacent to the building I worked in. Often people tried pan handling in front of the Timmies, but building security would usually go and ask them to leave. A couple of times there was this one panhandler that distinguished himself from the others. He would respectfully open the door for people entering the store regardless of them giving him anything. I was impressed by his willingness to actually work for the money, and I gladly handed him a looney, tooney, or loose change on the way out.

Anybody remember the woman with Tourette's, who used to panhandle at Yonge and College?

"Can you spare some change please, thank you, FUCK YOU.".

There are no gay panhandlers. When was the last time one said to you "Can you spare a two-nie? I'll just die if I don't have a latte.".

LMFAO, seriously! Because I would definitely asked him for a lesson.
I used to have 4 taxi’s on the road. The Valleyway motel in the Falls should have been condemned years ago. However, it puts a roof over 14 peoples head, so the city turns a blind eye.

he passed sometime during the Covid bullshit, but he has wheelchair (both legs amputated at the knee) and a German Shepard. He did alright on Clifton Hill.

then he would go go back, and one of the other crack heads would use his wheelchair and pretend they were crippled…. And do a shift. 5 hours.

Then there was Trevor. A native guy, late 20’s, (early 30’s)…. He would wear khaki pants, white shirt, and put the Native feathers head dress and native print vest on… and fake a good rain dance for an 8 to 10 hour shift at the bottom of the Hill. One of the guitar players busking made the mistake of asking him to watch their stuff while they made a bathroom run…. Lol. All the days money gone for that guy.

I had one girl visiting her mom and her aunt at that motel… told me her aunt once overdosed a guy on purpose, and when the ambulance took him away, she robbed his room on cheque day.

I am not claiming every pan handler makes a killing…. But some some of them are quite sharp and know how to work it.

Was downtown Toronto; I passed a panhandler sporting a Canada Goose jacket. The full length style, thrones that cost north of $1,000. Hmmm I’m sure there is more to the story but I walked right past this person.

I thought about taking a photo but given all the violence thought better.
That's the problem being a panhandler, when someone gives you an awesome gift like a full length Canada Goose jacket and you wear it cuz your fucking freezing, people then think you a rich piece of shit whose only virtue is that you aren't judging others by their appearances.

So here's the thing we all form an opinion or an unconscious bias/ first impressions based on appearance. I didn't disrespect the person. All I chose to do was not to given this person any money. Chose not to interact with the person.

I choose my charities carefully, whether direct or through an organization.
I generally do not give money to panhandlers on the street, squeegee people, or sign-carrying panhandlers at traffic lights.
Does anybody remember the exposee of the "shaky lady" in Toronto? She made good money as a panhandler, then walked back to her parked car and drove home to her house somewhere in Toronto.

Your naivety is cute and almost believable however the title of your post is, and I quote

" WHY I DONT GIVE OUT MONEY TO PANHANDLERS "

So based on your experience ( and assumptions ) with this one person you have decided to label the entire demographic with your sweeping bias and judgment.

The shovel you write with can only garnish you with one result.

Back in the fall I pass by the intersection of steeles and woodbine by Markham and I saw a lady in hijab panhandling in the middle of the island with a sign "Syrian Refugee"...aren't the gov't housing them and giving them support? Or is this lady just pretending to be a refugee?
Yes she's pretending to be a refugee. She and all those like her are actually gypsees, they're neither Syrian nor even Muslim! They're Romanian gypsees

When, where and how someone is soliciting small chance make a difference to me.

Displaying a written sign while saying nothing is a plus. Begging in the last 3-4 days of the month is a plus.

Saying "Can I ask you question?" before asking for money is a negative. Saying "I'm not a bum." before asking for money is a negative. Asking any simple question first is a negative - the first rule of 'bum school' is to get the target to say "Yes" to something.

Begging outside of a Beer Store or LCBO is a negative. I usually say 'If you want me to pay for your beer, you gotta have tits".

Begging outside of a grocery store is a negative if it's early in the month, or if change is requested on the way in.

Begging outside of a bank is a negative. It's as if the guy is expecting paper money.
