I don’t think you can do that in Canada. Part of the reason I don’t play the lotto, I don’t want to be ID’ed for winning big.
Same thing in NYS. I still play, though - I think I could deal with the consequences of winning

I think you can wear something to hide your face, but the lottery people are required to publicize winners. I believe its to show that everything is on the up and up, and that there are legit winners.

I guess a good question is this: You have a year to claim your prize. What steps would you take to ensure your safety before you claim the prize? A few things come to mind:
  • Change my phone number and only give the new one to trusted friends and family.
  • Book a trip out of the country or city for a least a month, where I would leave as quickly as possible after claiming the prize.
  • Retain a lawyer and financial planner to help protect me and the money. In the US, a lot of mega lottery winners are quickly sued for all sorts of bullshit reasons...
What else would you do?

Great list. My additions

  1. Scrub / suspend all social media accounts.
  2. Depending on the amount, pull my kids out of school for a week or so.
  3. Sign up for concierge banking services

First thing I'd do after winning is change my phone # and move

Yeah see these are a lot of great ideas but I wouldn’t want to uproot. I guess that is my privilege talking. I like my life. I have enough, I don’t have to worry, I’m financially stress-free so I don’t feel a “need” and because I’m happy with where life is at, I’m not really willing to change it.

I know - weird. Who doesn’t want to win millions of free dollars? I would love to but not at the risk of changing the life I have now. As it stands now. That could change in a year though. LOL.

That guy got it right, I have known some fucked up kids that came from rich families. Lazy bums, alcoholics, drug addicts, gamblers.

My family has a business that I use to work at in the summer time when I was younger. The accountant sent an assistant to catch up on the books. I had to get the guy all the info he requested. When Lunch time came we sat around talking and he told us about another client of the accounting firm that won a big jackpot. The guy thought he could live in his house like nothing had changed. He was bothered by people he knew and people that he did not know and he had to move to a more affluent neighborhood. He was bothered there as well. People even found him at his cottage.

I fucked a coke bitch that descended from a very rich family that invented a method of communication that was a technological advancement for the time. After several generations the family was still wealthy into the 80s. One daughter was an addicted coke fiend. She was potentially a heiress to the family fortune, but the family had cut her off because she might harm herself with the wealth. I also have known some of the members of the family that owns a big chunk of BMW. That family insist that their kids are educated, the kids are funded if they keep getting educated. Some of these people have several PhDs that they have never put to practical use. They use their expanded minds to sit on boards to maintain and enhance their family fortunes.

Yeah, I read a story about a decade ago about a dude in his late 50s who was an employee at a butcher shop in little Portugal (in Toronto). Apparently he wanted to keep working. He liked his job, liked his co-workers, like the regulars. But then everyone started asking for money. People would come in off the street just to pester him. It got so bad that he had to quit and move away.

The other potential concern is that having that kind of money now opens you up to other bullshit. Are family members now potential kidnapping victims?

In the US, a staggering number of those jackpot winners face three fates:
  • They are murdered within a few years of winning.
  • They face multiple lawsuits from people looking to get a piece of the pie (vast majority are frivolous)
  • They are bankrupt in five years have burned through the winnings on stupid purchases, parties and drugs.
There could be a few other things, but those are the main ones. Having that kind of cash suddenly makes you very vulnerable to scams and doing stupid things...

There was a case of a young woman ( under 30 ) out west that won $8 million. She gave away a lot of money to friends and family. She bought luxury goods that she could never afford before. She even bought a $400,000 Cadillac Escalade that was being customized for a rapper she liked, but the money that was coming in for the rapper stopped rolling in and he was on the hook for the customizations. She bought the car and let him off the hook hoping she would have a relationship with him. All she got was an autographed CD and a thank you from him. She burned through her $8 million in less than 18 months. In the end she was back on welfare and when the Escalade was sold she got less than $35,000 for it.

Everything but leave town, where could you vacation w/o kidnap risk? I'd immediately check in with local LE though. Paid up property taxes will be a plus...

Its illegal to bring lotto tickets into the US, for some archaic reason they are considered immoral goods. I forget the name of the law but it seems it is still on the books.
So if you play, make it an overnight trip
