Twitter’s workforce is likely to be hit with massive cuts in the coming months, no matter who owns the company, interviews and documents obtained by The Washington Post show, a change likely to have major impact on its ability to control harmful content and prevent data security crises.
Elon Musk told prospective investors in his deal to buy the company that he planned to get rid of nearly 75 percent of Twitter’s 7,500 workers, whittling the company down to a skeleton staff of just over 2,000.

Even if Musk’s Twitter deal falls through — and there’s little indication now that it will — big cuts are expected: Twitter’s current management planned to pare the company’s payroll by about $800 million by the end of next year, a number that would mean the departure of nearly a quarter of the workforce, according to corporate documents and interviews with people familiar with the company’s deliberations. The company also planned to make major cuts to its infrastructure, including data centers that keep the site functioning for more than 200 million users that log on each day.

Twitter employees have penned an open letter to soon-to-be boss Elon Musk and the Board of Directors begging to keep their jobs, after the Washington Post reported that Musk is planning to get rid of nearly 75% of the company's 7,500 workers - whittling Twitter down to a 'skeleton' staff of just over 2,000.

"Elon Musk’s plan to lay off 75% of Twitter workers will hurt Twitter’s ability to serve the public conversation," reads a draft of the letter, which has not yet been published. "A threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users’ and customers’ trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation."

The letter then suggests that the full staff is "helping to uplift independent journalism in Ukraine and Iran, as well as powering social movements around the world."

The employees then demand that Musk "explicitly commit to preserve our benefits, those both listed in the merger agreement and not (e.g. remote work). We demand leadership to establish and ensure fair severance policies for all workers before and after any change in ownership."

They also demand "Dignity," writing "We demand transparent, prompt and thoughtful communication around our working conditions. We demand to be treated with dignity, and to not be treated as mere pawns in a game played by billionaires."

Following the '75% layoff' report, 'experts' told ABC News that the change could "compromise the platform's capacity to police false or harmful content, with ramifications that extend to social issues like election integrity," and that "The experience of a typical user could change significantly, they added, noting the possible rise of harassment and other forms of corrosive discourse."

Cuts to the content moderation workforce would align with statements made by Musk in recent months about his commitment to the principle of free speech, suggesting that Twitter should permit all speech that stops short of violating the law, the experts said. -ABC News
Musk has reportedly told employees that "Anyone who is a significant contributor should have nothing to worry about," according to a June 16 tweet from Bloomberg reporter Kurt Wagner.

"If there is more harassment and other forms of toxic speech, if there is more misinformation and disinformation, then people's experience on the platform is going to be really different," said Zeve Sanderson, the executive director at New York University's Center for Social Media and Politics.

In short, Twitter employees are freaking out, and left-wing 'experts' fear that free speech will allow 'dangerous' information to reach millions.

This is what it looks like when ideological zealots lose control over narratives.

Twitter woke employee’s demands.
I love the "demand" on the penned letter to Elon Musk!!!! ...LMAO!

Twitter employees worried about Musk's ability to run Twitter but don't question Democrats installing a senile man as president. LOL

FYI:
I am still not convinced Musk ever gains control of Twitter. The globalists cannot afford to lose a chunk of their propaganda machine, not to mention that Twitter files and records would be a treasure trove of damning evidence of collusion and rights violations.
But it is an abysmally managed outfit, so the cabal might let it go after the midterms. In the meantime, they have the Biden Junta looking for a way to stall and possibly prohibit the transaction based on national security. If that happens it still a win for Elon Musk.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

It sounds like Twitter was planning to cut back on staff anyhow…and now with Elon taking over he will probably lift Trump’s Twitter ban and allow all forms of free speech.

My sense is that Twitter is becoming less important than it once was and is being displaced by Tik Tok. Most people find Twitter to be a shitty, toxic place even with the controls it has in place now; I predict that with Elon in charge it will devolve into Parler2.0- a cesspool of racism and conspiracy theories.

I'm sorry, who is blocking the purchase based on National Security?

As for "Twitter files and records would be a treasure trove of damning evidence of collusion and rights violations" ... maybe. But Twitter's pro-right wing agenda is pretty well known, I don't think there would be secret files of collusion there.

That a plutocrat elitist like Musk thinks the first thing to do is fire everybody is just typical - like your article says, Twitter is probably going to do that no matter what.

I'm glad to see the workforce making demands, but they should really unionize.

This is kind of true.
I still don't think lots of professional movers and shakers use tiktok. (It's not a great platform for a lot of what they do.)
But the kids use TikTok and that's where you need to aim the propaganda.

There is a replacement starting up.
I know people have been pitching "counter social" (I think) as well.

I'm suspicious of most of these "pro-democracy" start ups. I doubt they aren't just land grabs.
In the end, all of these things live or die by network effects, and it might just be that none become the new default and everyone stays fractured.

Agreed, but I think if Elon takes over and fires 3/4 of the company people might move.
Consumers have big power, but it takes a big kick to get them moving.

Elon coming in and firing all those people might get people to move. Maybe.
Elon not coming in and the current management firing all those people will barely get noticed.

I can not remember the last time Elon said something that turned out to be true. He is just throwing out a 75% figure for shock value, he will see how the stock price goes and then make a decision.

Lets hope its another failed right wing attempt to control the media and social media.

I'm sure he's smarter than MTG, but...

You can always block people you don't like on Twitter. Me and the other libtards will have our block buttons working overtime. So what?!... I block that shit anyway and little of it is targeted at me in any event.

The real problem is that people who subscribe to conspiracy theories about "Stop the Steal" or "How vaxxes cause heart attacks" or "How Ukraine has secret bio warfare labs" are going to have a field day with an asshole like Musk in charge. So the US (and Canada) is going to get less and less governable as the anti-vaxxers, MAGAs and sovereign citizens have ever more of a podium. And Musk's buddy Putin almost certainly is funding the takeover that Musk is now suddenly able to pull off.

So look forward to lots of articles about what a great guy Putin is and what an asshole, cokehead, transsexual deviant Zelensky is - because why the fuck else would The Poo be spending money on this?!

The world's richest man also changed his Twitter bio to "Chief Twit.

[...]
Elon Musk sauntered into Twitter's San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday carrying a kitchen sink in preparation for his Friday takeover of the company.

Musk is trolling Twitter with this stunt.
So just the usual Musk bullshit and trolling for attention.
Fine.

Well, if Twitter users are lucky he will stick to his usual "seagull" management style - fly in from on high, shit all over everything, then leave. As long as he only bothers to come in and fuck with things rarely, it shouldn't be too bad.
