Boston University scientists were today condemned for 'playing with fire' after it emerged they had created a lethal new Covid strain in a laboratory.

DailyMail.com revealed the team had made a hybrid virus — combining Omicron and the original Wuhan strain — that killed 80 per cent of mice in a study.

The revelation exposes how dangerous virus manipulation research continues to go on even in the US, despite fears similar practices may have started the pandemic.

Professor Shmuel Shapira, a leading scientist in the Israeli Government, said: 'This should be totally forbidden, it's playing with fire.'

Gain of function research - when viruses are purposefully manipulated to be more infectious or deadly - is thought to be at the center of Covid's origin.

A Chinese laboratory located just miles from the first cluster of cases carried out similar research on bat coronaviruses.

But the practice has been largely restricted in the US since 2017.

Dr Richard Ebright, a chemist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, told DailyMail.com that: 'The research is a clear example of gain of function research.

He added: 'If we are to avoid a next lab-generated pandemic, it is imperative that oversight of enhanced potential pandemic pathogen research be strengthened.'

Outrage as Boston University CREATES Covid strain that has an 80% kill rate | Daily Mail Online

Today we call for the arrest and criminal prosecution of the scientists at Boston University who have apparently violated US law and engaged in dangerous gain-of-function research to create a chimeric covid “superstrain” that achieves an 80% kill rate in mice. This bombshell news was broken by the UK Daily Mail in an exclusive story that documents how Boston University scientists combined a spike protein from the Omicron strain with the “original Wuhan Covid strain” to create a new super strain that kills 80% of mice upon exposure.

The organizations involved in this research — all of which should be immediately investigated for criminal violations of gain-of-function research prohibitions in the United States — include:

Department of Biochemistry, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA
National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories, Boston University, Boston, MA, USA
Department of Microbiology, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA
Cleveland Clinic Florida Research and Innovation Center, Port St. Lucie, FL, USA
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, USA
Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA, USA
Center for Regenerative Medicine of Boston University and Boston Medical Center, Boston, MA, USA
The Pulmonary Center and Department of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA

Take note of all the organizations and individuals involved in this dangerous research, for if this chimeric, deadly bioweapon escapes their hold, this time the U.S. won’t be able to blame China. It’s home-grown biological terrorism this time.

That's interesting.
The original Wuhan COVID had a 100% kill rate in those mice, if I remember, so they've actually created a less deadly strain.

CM, if I were you I'd go get the jab so you are protected when Boston University releases the new version.

New Boston virus

kills 80% humanize mice ( have human gene) . That means the mice have been genetically have similar like human system in themselves from video 13:36 to End
The 100% kill rate in original wuhanin mouse may not have gene from human. Proof to me the orginal Wuhan’s vruius that was 100% kill rate was test on only nonhuman mice. ( without any gene from wuhan). Bet you your memory is incorrect!!

PS. I strongly supect that if USA have that type viruses that mean other People may want to hav E some sort a military uses. And if USA have that type of chimera mouse virus…you can bet your ass other countries like China, Russia, and want to have it too just in case for military uses.

PPS. I think this new strain is more deadly then the original strain of wuhan virus and more easily more transmission then the wuhan vruis, We’re we not able to stop the transmission of omicron!!! This chimeric omicron/ wuhan viruis if every escape will kills hundreds of millions or billions of people . It will make this current pandemic ( not yet declared over by WHO) … a little minor rainstorm as compared to a hurricane!!

If you hang around here long enough, you might learn not to bet with me.

Yes, the mouse involved is the K18-hACE2 transgenic mice. They've been using it for a while as a model for SARS-CoV2 because of how susceptible the mice are to the disease. (At least the original strain.)
You can see some work establishing how vulnerable those mice are here in this paper from January 2021.

An earlier one from late 2020 as they developed the model.

So yes, extremely lethal to that same genetically engineered mouse.

Of course, what's more important is what happened to mice in this experiment because obviously different factors can affect things.

So in this experiment (which is available publicly as a pdf here: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.10.13.512134v1.full.pdf) they infected three sets of mice:

10 with Omicron
6 with original Sars-CoV-2 strain (Wild Type or WT)
10 with their modified Wild Type that used the Omnicron spike. (Omi-S)

The results?
After 14 days (using the protocol measures they established),
0 out of 10 Omicron-infected mice died.
6 out of 6 Wild Type-infected mice died.
8 out of 10 Omicron-Spike infected mice died.

So adding omicron spikes to the Wild Type took its lethality down from 100% to 80%.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Guess I lost.
By the way the Sample size is too small by the way. If you know anything about statistics… or biostatistics!
It will be a hollow victory if proven that the sample size is too small and skewed the data…the lethality of the data from 100% to 80 % !

The sample size is very small.
It is a pre-print and a preliminary thing to see if it looked like a promising avenue of research.
If it wasn't for the fact that the news media like the Daily Mail wanted to scare people about evil secret Gain of Function research, no one would have paid any attention to it.
But clickbait articles exist because people want outrage.
