I really didn't think it was Ukraine because it seemed to make more sense as an internal thing, but it isn't crazy that Ukraine did it.

I'm not a big fan of "symbolic targets" in this kind of shit, but people view things differently.
I see this conflict as having a significant difference in the morality of each side (though I have no doubt that some Ukrainian soldiers have done immoral things). If Ukraine started acting the way that Russia did, they would lose my support.
No one is "nonchalant" about nuclear war. The issue is that you have an aggressive large country that is intent on gobbling up its neighbours and re establishing a historical hegemony and which has incorporated nuclear threats and possibly nuclear employment as part of that expansionism. So the choice becomes: Either give Putin whatever he wants and avoid nuclear war for a few more months, or threaten immediate nuclear retaliation.
