Realistically, without strings, she's shit out of luck if she wants to rent in the City of Toronto. Of the 4050 listings on kijiji maybe 3 or 4 units are renting for $1k or less. The rest are rooms with shared kitchens/bathrooms.

If she's okay with a ghetto 350 square foot basement apartment, this one's available for $750:

Yeah, the going rate for a proper bachelor (by proper I mean with a parking spot, separate entrance..etc) on there is 1100.00, so a few more hundred should open up her options quite a bit if she can find a way.

We need to fundamentally address what has driven up real estate beyond affordability over the last couple decades. Anything else is a bandaid solution.
As painful as it would be for those who bought real estate in recent years, I'm hoping for a crash of 40% in home prices to bring us back to sanity. Frankly, it should be more like 50%. The only problem with a crash is its ripple effect on the economy as a whole. Which is why the government should never have let things get so damn bad to begin with.
Blame the government all you want but when people are bidding 10's and sometimes 100's of thousands of dollars over asking they have no one to blame but themselves. Government has no control over that.

Thanks all - I sent her the some of the suggestions - keep them coming. She is on a waitlist for Toronto Community housing, but the wait list is counted in years, and can only be expidted if she's escaping an abusive relationship or homeless.

I sent her the ad for the basement near Eglinton, it's worth a look... However that sweet condo in "Downtown Toronto" with "Mountain views" for $1000 seems to good to be true :)
She can maybe look at getting on the emergency list if she meets the qualifications. If she is homeless or going to be for example. However if she is secure where she is, that won’t help.

Also, if she can - she should look outside of her area. I know moving is hard and moving from say Toronto to Durham would be hard but opening the area to other places can also help.

People are bidding that much because that's the market right now. It's literally impossible to get a house without doing so. Should they just give up? It's been decades since housing was affordable in this country, meaning the government should have intervened a long time ago.

Most important right now is that Canadians have an affordable, primary residence. That means placing restrictions on those buying their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 20th property. That means placing restrictions on people using real estate as solely an investment (beyond their primary residence). That means restricting property flipping. That means restricting foreign purchases. Our government should have gotten serious about this awhile ago and introduced these measures in a reasonable way. But now the problem is so bad that drastic and immediate action is needed.

We live in a free market society. I guess that's why you have no problem with bidding wars. But you want to put restrictions on people house flipping, people buying their 2,3,4 homes if they get transferred or relocate for work, people buying houses to rent to people who can't afford to buy?
Hmmm, better rethink your ideas.

Many people can't afford to buy because they don't have the down payment. People buying second houses because they happen to be born in better situations, ( like inheritance) then using that house to keep profiting off the ones that can't get a head because the market is out of wack and weren't born into as fortunate situations, will only help widen the gap between rich and poor. We'll become like a developing country if we don't have a middle class then can afford houses.

People working two jobs making 55/60k can barley afford a 1 bedroom apartment. Something has to be done.

If you restrict people to owning 1 house there will be a lot of empty houses and even more people living in parks.
Blaming people being born into "better situations" is comical. Ridiculing people for being successful is a cop out.

We're already there in major cities. But it's been this way for major urban cities everywhere for quite some time. There are plenty of more affordable options across the country.

We sold our Toronto home to be mortgage free, and ended up right back in the city’s red-hot real estate market

As for the OP, the woman's options are 1) move to where it's more affordable 2) give up her child for adoption or kill it 3) get a higher paying job such as escorting 4) get on some form of welfare 5) find a sucker to be stepdad who will foot half the bills - if she's as attractive as you say, this isn't difficult for a woman to achieve.

Better try to understand them first. No where did I say I'm fine with bidding wars. The fact that it has come to bidding wars shows just how bad the situation has gotten. I'm saying it's a pipedream to just think people will magically stop doing it, when it's currently the only way to get a house. More dangerous still, it's almost impossible now to get a house as a buyer whilst listing conditions, as so many are waiving them in a desperate attempt to make a deal. This also favors the rich, as they don't have to list financing as a condition, further crimping first-time buyers.

So, what is the difference if the house is listed for $1.5M and sold for $1.4M versus the same house listed for $1.3M and sold for $1.4M. IMHO, bidding wars are an efficient way to buy or sell the house and it does not affect the final price. And the idea of "conditions: are stupid: if the buyer decides to change his mind - the seller needs to start over. You want to do an inspection - do it before making the offer (usually sellers do not consider offers in the first few days after listing). Same with mortgage.

Why would there be empty houses???? What would happen is prices would just cool off and make them affordable.
Second, who “blamed” people for being born in a better situation? I simple said they because of that, It’s one of the reasons a person/people that are “in the median” can’t afford a house. There’s something inherently wrong if your society is in a situation where where middle income earners can’t afford a 1 bedroom.
Lastly, you consider someone that inherited 100Gs or more “successful”?

Just to be clear, you rather have non Canadians buying multiple properties (especially on the condo market) so they cuddle and hide their money then have hard working Canadians being able to afford a house or a condo? Because that’s the root of the problem. You have foreign investors that have multiple condos here sitting empty.
Great for our country huh?

There would be empty houses because someone suggested putting restrictions on people on only being allowed to own 1 house. So if you have more than 1 house are you going to sell it for a loss? That would make landlords who rent houses obsolete.
Why did the inheritance question got thrown in?
No one here brought it up. I sure didn't.

Free market society. Don't like it move to a communist country.
Your statement is a lil racist running down non-Canadians for owning homes. They have that right just as much as you do.

Nah, he is saying the root of the problem, or one of the roots, is that housing units are left empty while there is a shortage of housing.
Many large cities have occupancy rules to avoid this problem. I favour solving the problem through taxation instead of moving homeless people into empty housing units.

Feudalism is making a comeback. First in the UK but others may follow. Citizens in the "first world" are in denial of what's happening.

nothing racist about it so don’t fucking put words in my mouth asshole. I simply said that hard working Canadians that have a right to a fighting chance to own a house . Right now they don’t. Our current system is allowing foreign investors to hide and cuddle money while their condos sit empty. Mean while, Canadians are busting their ass’s and can’t afford a place in their own fucking county. I get the fact that we live in a capitalist country, but let’s keep it to the point where we don’t end up like a developing county because of people that don’t even live in this county.
And don’t ever tell me to move somewhere else if you know what’s good for you.

So what. They are left empty. If the taxes are paid and lawn isn't unkept it's not a big deal.
Alot of Canadians own a second home in the USA, Europe.
