Single mom, looking for apartments, budget is $1000

Team TERB, I'm helping a friend of friend canvass for apartments. She's a single mother with a 3 year old son, she's gainfully employed, heart of gold, and not a person who causes problems for landlords. If anyone knows of any options - please do share!

Ideally a 1 bedroom or larger, and basement units are fine. Trying to avoid shared kitchens/bathrooms.

I'd be shocked if you can find anything in the GTA at that price point. Even is a smaller town it would be hard... even if you are willing to tolerate unlevel clown house floors, a stench of mildew and that sweet sweet mold.

I own the home I live in. It's way too much house but I'd be terrified of moving into an apartment if I could find one and then be forced out and end up homeless. They are booting everyone out of a major complex in this small berg for maintenance. Never mind they could do one building at a time but noooo.

That's not true. If your talking about a nice condo that's someone is renting ya....but you can find 1 bedroom's 13 or 1400. I was looking a little while ago just cause I was curious to see what's out and saw a bachelor in a nice area for 1100. The OP said the friend needs a 1 bedroom so that wouldn't work but if you look, you can definitely find stuff closer to 1300 or 1400, and I'm not talking about co-op housing.

Right up until the point they apply. I've had several friends stuck trying to find places, even budding wars on rentals, applications rejected for nick picky reasons.

The advertised price is not the real one.

Thanks all - I sent her the some of the suggestions - keep them coming. She is on a waitlist for Toronto Community housing, but the wait list is counted in years, and can only be expidted if she's escaping an abusive relationship or homeless.

I sent her the ad for the basement near Eglinton, it's worth a look... However that sweet condo in "Downtown Toronto" with "Mountain views" for $1000 seems to good to be true

Realistically, without strings, she's shit out of luck if she wants to rent in the City of Toronto. Of the 4050 listings on kijiji maybe 3 or 4 units are renting for $1k or less. The rest are rooms with shared kitchens/bathrooms.

We need to fundamentally address what has driven up real estate beyond affordability over the last couple decades. Anything else is a bandaid solution.
As painful as it would be for those who bought real estate in recent years, I'm hoping for a crash of 40% in home prices to bring us back to sanity. Frankly, it should be more like 50%. The only problem with a crash is its ripple effect on the economy as a whole. Which is why the government should never have let things get so damn bad to begin with.
