You wonder what's this story..

One man is dead after being shot by police near an elementary school on Thursday afternoon, Toronto police said, prompting hundreds of children at nearby schools to go into lockdown.

Police were initially called to Maberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road for reports of a person carrying a rifle on the street around 1 p.m.

Paramedics were called to the corner of Lawrence Avenue East and Port Union Road at 1:24 p.m. for a reported shooting.

Police said an officer discharged a firearm at a suspect, striking the man at least once.

Video obtained from the scene shows officers cordoning off a section of Port Union Road. An orange tarp was seen covering something on the sidewalk.

At a press conference Thursday evening, Toronto police chief James Ramer called the incident "traumatic" for all involved.

"We certainly understand the trauma and how traumatic this must have been for staff, students and parents given the two recent events that have happened in the United States," he said.

"We will step up patrols in the area and continue to work with our school and community partners and services will be available for those that require those services."

A spokesperson from the Toronto Police Association confirmed that two TPS officers were transported to hospital following the incident, but did not sustain injuries. No additional injuries were reported.

Toronto District School Board says Joseph Howe Senior Public School, Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute and William G Davis Junior Public School were all initially placed under lockdown.

Charlottetown Junior Public School and Centennial Road Junior Public School were in hold and secures.

As of 3 p.m., all lockdowns and hold and secures had been lifted, with the exception of William G Davis Junior Public School, which remains in hold and secure, to "ensure an orderly dismissal."

Toronto Catholic District School Board confirmed that St. Brendan Catholic School was also placed under lockdown, which lifted just before 2:10 p.m.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that have resulted in a death or serious injury, has confirmed they have invoked their mandate folllowing Thursday's incident.

Good, one man dead that no one really cares that the cops killed, hope they filled him full of lead like Sonny Corleone.

No kids harmed, excellent work TPS.
With the suspect dead [ and with no victims ] that is always the best result . Really I have absolutely no interest what his mental health issues were nor what his pathetic story/history
was. The fewer train wrecks running around the better.

The anti-police mob will be out in force protesting.

The "rifle" was a BB gun.

If so have a thought for the cops. I know 0 cops who have had to kill who are not permanently affected by it.

Quite often, it's the end of their policing career. Cops get PTSD and all sorts of other psychological baggage from having killed someone. The cop in this case will be in therapy for years.

Anyone who says they could kill a person -- even if it means saving their own life or the lives of others -- and not be psychologically affected by it in the least is either a psychopath (people unable to feel empathy or emotional pain) or they haven't experienced having to do this and are therefore talking out of their ass.

There's a reason soldiers come back from war and refuse to discuss what they did or what they saw.

Moral of this story is, never point a gun if there is no intention to pull the trigger. Whether it is civilian or law enforcement It is considered a threat and will be fatal.

We still don't know the name or why...

Apparently cops had to go to the hospital, maybe the 2 cops that shot him freaked out after they found out it was a pellet gun.

Witnesses interviewed by CP24 said they heard "show your hands", "drop the weapon". No, cops did not ask if that is a toy/pellet gun.

(Maybe the man was deaf and couldn't hear the officers and/or he didn't understand English.)
