How can I be blocked from a Twitter user that I never contacted in the past?
Occasionally I might glance at followers/ing of a Twitter friend, but when I click on the name of one of his follwer/ing, I'm told that I'm blocked from their account. That's different than getting the message that this account is for friends only. How can they specifically block me if they don't know me?

I can't figure this one out...

Maybe they saw a reply made to someone you both equally follow and they didn’t like it so they “pre” blocked you.

That's the only reason why I block people I don't know on Twitter. Not saying that you did that OP of course but if I see a guy attacking providers for no reason, it's a red flag that he might end up doing the same to me.

I block people that I have had no interaction with. I use social media mostly to follow friends, family and topics I am interested in. Unfortunately the feed algorithms are designed to force stuff on us, promote ads and shit disturb. So when I see something in my feed that is absolutely absurd, I just block that user so I do not see their crap anymore in my feed. I just wish we could block by keywords - as an example, do not show me anything with "Trump" contained in the text.

Not saying that is what happened to you, but you asked how, so I gave you one scenario.

As an example, here I block any agencies or Indys that require deposits or that I divulge my real identity. Since their business practices are incompatible with mine, there is no reason for me to see what they are posting.

That scenario is very realistic, but I don't think it applies in my case. I always behave as a gentleman on social media and I dare anyone to find any post of mine that may be slanderous or offensive. On this board, I never get into intimate details of a session and "I will not repeat" will be the harshest words I may use after a bad experience.
