The Sun just updated the story. Sounds like the victim was into drugs, and that he and the three suspects were all known to each other. He wittingly let them into his pad, and then at some point things went sideways. Robbery gone bad is what is being speculated.

Holy shit! For a short period in my life I took SC dancers to after hour booze cans. One night I somehow pissed off one of the scary dudes (probably a Leaf fan) that hang out at these booze cans and he punched an aquarium. His fist went right through the glass and he was bleeding profusely.

All you have to do is look at the photos of the parties involved. Daniel Hoffman was a well-dressed, clean-cut professional. The other three looked like they climbed out of a cesspool.

They may have had lot of dealings before, as many times users will do drugs with the dealers. Probably established some type of relationship where Hoffman felt comfortable enough with them, not knowing what kinds of pieces shit he wad dealing with, something happened and it bit him in the ass.
