The Ontario government is permanently scraping tolls on two highways starting next week.

Beginning on April 5, tolls will be removed on Highway 412 and Highway 418. The move was announced by the provincial government in February.

Highways 412 and 418 are two north-south oriented highways that connect Highway 401 to Highway 407 in Durham Region. They are currently the only tolled north-south highways in Ontario.

"We agree that the tolls imposed on Highways 412 and 418 by the previous government are wrong and unfair," Premier Doug Ford said in February while announcing the tolls would be removed.

The government said they believe removing these tolls will provide more travel options for local residents, and relieve gridlock on local roads across Durham Region.

Tolls on Highway 407, which is privately owned and operated, are not effected by this change.

The current tolls rates for Highway 412 and 418 are the consistent with Highway 407, which vary depending on the time and direction a driver is travelling.

407 fines for under use need to be enforced and also increased.
All private highways /tolls should be taxed heavily Unless they are well used.

Not much you can do about the 407, not owned by Ontario. It is owned by CPP and other companies...at least your CPP pension is at work...

In 1999, 407 International became the owner of the 407 ETR Concession Company Limited ("407 ETR") which is the operator and manager of the highway, which extends 108 kilometers east-west across the top of the Greater Toronto Area.
The Company is owned by indirectly owned subsidiaries of Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (total 50.01%), also known as CPP Investments; Cintra Global S.E., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ferrovial S. A. (43.23%); and SNC-Lavalin (6.76%).
Ferrovial, S.A., previously Grupo Ferrovial, is a Spanish multinational company involved in the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of transport infrastructure and urban services. It is a publicly-traded company and is part of the IBEX 35 capitalization-weighted stock market index.
SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. is a Canadian company based in Montreal that provides engineering, procurement, and construction services to various industries, including mining and metallurgy, oil and gas, environment and water, infrastructure, and clean power.

Actual lots can be done - the current agreement has fines set out with the company if they do not have enough traffic - they have failed to meet targets over and over again yet no fines are issued. This is millions of dollars.

The company if it actual feared fines, would lower rates to make sure traffic flow met targets.

Second, if you play dirty pool you can tax all highways in Ontario. Ontario pays back to Ontario, but the private company pays to Ontario. The tax structure can be based on tolls the less tools the less tax. Or on traffic, the more traffic again less taxes. The dirty part is you can raise it so much the company will go out biz, and the high way becomes a gain back to the province.

Such simialr things have been done for Strip clubs, Alchol and various other things that public generally supports. Strip clubs are effiectly slowing being phased out by cities and provinces.
