I really liked how Willy was playing in the early part of the season. I thought just maybe he had finally learnt how to take his game to a higher level. Perhaps it’s just coincidence but his game seemed to have slipped off with the return of Marner from injuries. His focus and drive have been missing. He’s a high maintenance player and Keefe has to send him the message every now and then by cutting his ice time and demoting him to the 3rd line. I’ve read suggestions that Matthews hated playing with him and Tavares must be frustrated when Willy is just floating around. Maybe he’s thinking that “I’m only being paid $6.9mil, you $11 mil guys need to do all the hard work”.

Haha...I'm sure his attitude is not “I’m only being paid $6.9mil, you $11 mil guys need to do all the hard work”.

If you think he's soft as shit and lazy, why would you think they'd get a decent return for him? Are teams in the market for those types of players?

At $ 7M, he will be plugged into the top 6, there are expectations when you play higher up in the lineup.
He doesn't produce enough to get slack cut in other aspects of his game.
At least that's the way I would see it if I was coach/GM.

Look at some other $7M players...I think Nylander is a bargain compared to some of the rest.

It's not the stupidest thing on here...I'd say this is...

If the cap doesn't rise significantly, the question is really can you afford to keep him? Talent-wise, he's a keeper.

Contract-wise, can you afford to keep paying Matthews $12M, Tavares and Marner $11M, Reilly and Nylander $7M, and Muzzin and Brody $5-6M and still have money to ice a competitive team when Campbell will ask for a shit-ton more cash after this season, you need to re-tool your backup goalie situation (Mrazek M-NTC @ $4Mper), Miheykey is a UFA this year, and you've got four other RFA's in Kase, Engvall, Sandin and Liljegren to bump up? Bunting and Kampf also turning out to be keepers with only one more year on their contracts to becoming UFAs.

For a while it looked like Willy Styles might be odd man out, but his play this season has changed a lot of minds (not mine, don't like him) and his contract is too sweet to deal. You're not going to trade Matthews or Tavares (NMC) or Reilly (NMC), Muzzin (NTC), Brodie (NTC) either.

You can keep playing the shell game with the bottom six, but in the end something will need to give. Thinking of the future I still say trading Marner this off-season for a boat load is probably the best option.

Only the guys that have always had a serious issue with him, no big surprise.

Probably some, but being "not as bad" as some of the other signings doesn't make him attractive either.
I will agree that he's the most tradeable asset between him, Marner, Tavares (Matthews isn't going anywhere).

Some of those contracts are with the teams that signed them, they're stuck with them, it's another story to trade for an underperforming player.
I'm not saying he's shit but if I'm going to chase a $7M player, he better perform.
The only team that should chase him is a competitive team that needs a side piece and has cap space, kind of like Pittsburgh with Kessel.
And the Leafs still had to eat some of that contract.

Draft good players
Trade good players for crappier players.
Is that what Wicki is proposing? :ROFLMAO:

We're all still waiting to hear your genius hockey mind's solution to the Leafs cap woes next year supershithead. They can't keep everyone. They won't likely go very deep in the playoffs this year either which will again enrage the fans. Something significant has to change.

We'll wait while you enlighten us, but won't hold our breaths.

But no doubt, you'll just go on posting useless stats and chirping safely from just outside the spotlight. Seems that's your sweet spot in this forum.
