Trash entertainment. As someone mentioned, he started off as a legit newsy talk show where they would discuss controversial topics and things in the news. Then it went tabloid and started with the sensational crap like the paternity shows or lie detector shows. I never understood why people went on these shows. They don't get paid to appear (besides a trip and hotel room), but face public ridicule...I never understood that mentality.

I always felt horrible for the kids in the paternity shows. I saw one where they had some chick on like five times and there were like 10 different dudes being subjected to the paternity test....and none of them were the father. She was slut shamed....But, man, think about how small a women's fertility window is each month. It's only maybe 5-6 days, and she had unprotected sex with that many dudes. She should also get an STD test...

I read a lot of these people on maury or springer actually are treated like heroes when they get back...like they can't distinguish notorious from famous. Maybe getting free trips to Chicago or wherever makes it worthwhile to them. I don't get it, but...

You enjoyed the show which isn't surprising. If an academic paper was written about black family breakdown and dysfunction in America, you would claim to be appalled but put a white guy on TV showcasing the same topics for entertainment value, and you become a fan.

Any time I came across the show it was one illiterate black person not wanting to assume responsibility for bearing a child after another. Blacks comprise something like 12% of America's population yet 90% of Maury's guests were dumb broke American blacks. It was the same thing with Jerry Springer.

What show should people watch now that profit off black stereotypes and buffoonery? You probably know about and love all of them. I look forward to your recommendations.

While on this topic, I found old episodes of the Anna Nichol smith show on YouTube. Everyone thought the train wreck of her life was hilarious when it was on. When you see it now you realize it was an exploitative show and the poor girl just needed some mental health professionals.

I thought years ago that people pretended to be in a dispute about who the father was simply for a free trip to NYC. The show moved to Connecticut but a lot of the guests wouldn’t have had an opportunity to be flown to NYC then be put up in a decent hotel without Maury. IIRC a woman once had over 30 guys tested for paternity for her kids
