It’s become far too common for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to denounce anyone he disagrees with as a racist, misogynist or even a Nazi but that he did so to a Jewish woman on Wednesday is outrageous. Yet there was Trudeau, responding to a completely reasonable question by linking Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman to people waving Nazi flags.
It was yet another example of how our Parliament under this current government doesn’t see real debate take place, it sees the Trudeau Liberals respond to any questions like children in the school yard.
Lantsman was questioning the government on their decision to invoke the Emergencies Act, a serious move, one that no government has ever contemplated. She contrasted two quotes from Trudeau, one from 2015 saying governments must trust the public in order for the public to trust them compared to his recent comments denouncing those protesting the government’s pandemic measures.
“Same prime minister, six years later as he fans the flames of an unjustified national emergency,” Lanstman said. “When did the prime minister lose his way?”
It’s a simple question, one Trudeau could easily have brushed aside without going where he did.
“Conservative Party members can stand with people who wave swastikas flags, they can stand who wave the Confederate flags, we will stand with Canadians,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau knew who he was speaking to. He knows who Melissa Lantsman is and that she is not only Jewish herself but also represents the riding with the biggest Jewish population in the country. Maybe he didn’t know that she was the descendent of Holocaust survivors but that hardly matters. Trudeau knew enough to know better.
Lantsman raised a point of order in the House of Commons asking Trudeau for an apology but he had already left the House.
“I did not get that apology,” Lantsman told me when I spoke to her Thursday.
“I think this is exactly what I have seen and what so many Canadians have seen for a long time and I think true colours were shown. When you don’t agree with the prime minister or you don’t see things the way he does you are racist, you are misogynist, you are othered. That’s a problem.”
Lantsman said that Trudeau is simply trying to feed into the divisions in this country. Were it just a Conservative MP saying this, maybe you could shrug your shoulders and say it’s all partisan politics but it’s not just Lantsman and her Conservative colleagues.
“We are more divided than ever,” Liberal MP Joel Lightbound said last week.
Lightbound broke ranks by criticizing his own government and Trudeau in particular for playing wedge politics with important issues like the pandemic.
“From a positive and unifying approach, a decision was made to wedge to divide and to stigmatize,” Lightbound said.
Now that attempt to wedge, to divide, to stigmatize goes as far as linking a Jewish MP to Nazis.
What’s bizarre is that while the Liberals keep seeing Nazis all over the protests in Ottawa, not a single Conservative MP has been stood with anyone carrying such a flag. There has been exactly one swastika flag seen in Ottawa and that was on the first day and the person never made it to the protest site. They were chased away.
If that is the bar Trudeau wants to set for linking people to evil, what should we say about him being photographed with Nazis, even signing a swastika flag for one of them as he did in 2017?
The fact is, we have very serious issues before us but we don’t have a serious person leading our government.
Trudeau owes Lantsman an apology, he owes Canada a serious response to the crisis he helped create.
