I had this co worker in the 90's who was a Hip fanatic but I just couldn't get what all the fuss was about. To me they sounded quite mediocre.
He kept saying that they "kick ass" but I just couldn't hear it. Van Halen kicked ass....The Hip sounded sluggish to me.
He was a Grunge kid so maybe it was a generational thing.
They were only popular because they were Canadian and for Ontarians they were a local band. They're from Kingston the same hometown as Don Cherry Doug Gilmour and Kirk Muller which I'm sure gave them some notoriety. I always referred to them as the tragically shit.

I liked Road Apples. That's it.

Alice in Chains opened up for Van Halen when I saw them. They sucked live (that night anyway) and told the audience off. Was never able to get into them after that.

I actually don’t mind the Hip…. Yeah, they were over rated. However, they had their own sound and thing going on. They were not a cookie cutter grunge band like every other band was trying to be.

But NOONE can compare with The Tragically Hip for being so bad on so many fronts:

voice, music, quality of musicianship, meaningless lyrics - while pathetically trying to sound meaningful.
Have we hit April Fools Day 2 months early?
Up to Here and Fully Completely are classic rock albums.
Meaningless lyrics? might one be the most ridiculous music takes ever.
Next to Rush this is probably Canada's best rock group.

I almost fell off my chair when I saw Alex Lifeson at #5. Thankfully the dude was only joking.
Most of those guitarists I've never heard of tbh.

Funny you mention Alice in Chains. I never like them back in the 90's but I find myself liking their music more today. But I would agree they had a lot of misses and would qualify as being overrated in my books as well.

They have one song I really like…. One of the radio ones. I am just biased now. Call out a Toronto audience when I paid to see you…. Fuck that. They may be good. I was never going to give them a chance.

I expect I'll get grief over this but... Elvis Presley is the most overhyped entertainer ever in my opinion.

Oh, he's not terrible. I really like some of his songs. But (again, in my opinion) he's nowhere near worthy of the God-like adoration he gets.

Pretty good entertainer. Nothing more.

for me, i dont think Pink Floyd,Queen and Elton John are overrated....but i just dont listen to their music,,,,leaves me cold....like for example i love Black Music, be it early R&R like Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley, 60,s Soul and the Blues, but i dont like the bulk of Stevie Wonder,s work....is he overrated ? no but i just dont seek out his stuff..............................however about Billy Joel?...trying listeneing to My Life more than twice in a row...........i would run screaming for my Momma ..lol..

I agree with you on his music, being good but he's more regaled as an entertainer than a really good singer...
Now if we're talking about good singers that are under the radar....
