Juveniles should be tried and treated as adults

One of the benefits of trying juveniles as adults are that it minimizes and stops crimes committed by minors
You basically are undermining the concept of statutory rape. You would be arguing that a minor has the adult judgement to commit crimes but they are unable to make the choice of voluntary sexual contact with an adult.

I understand the urge to punish perpetrators of horrific crimes but treatment as adults is problematic. They are still a danger and society has to protect itself, I am not advocating holding a ticking time bomb and then releasing them untreated.

In Robert A Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers, set in a future where only military veterans are allowed to vote, the sentence for a juvenile criminal would be a public whipping - and the teen's father would also receive ten lashes, for raising a juvenile delinquent.

There is a certain logic to the voting restriction: The military service is voluntary, and a large percentage of the veterans die in combat before having the opportunity to vote. The privilege of voting is given only to those who have first demonstrated that they put the interests of the Human Race ahead of their own self interests.
So many Sci Fi Novels have been eerily accurate about the course of future events...

Thanks, I will get this book and read it.

Finding a paperback copy of this 1959 novel can be difficult; it may be out of print, and it's banned from many public libraries.

If I was trying to find a copy in Toronto, the first two places I would look would be Sellers and Newell on College Street near Grace, or Doug Miller Books on Bloor Street West, a bit west of Bathurst. Peter Sellers, (not the actor), and Doug Miller are personal friends of mine. These stores might be closed or have limited business hours because of COVID-19 restrictions; it's best to contact them in advance.

Peter has a large selection of science fiction, (much of it in the store basement), and Doug is the best source for out of print books for children/teens. The second hand book store on Yonge Street just north of Wellesley, (I don't remember the name), or ABC Books, further up Yonge, would be my third and fourth choices.

The book is very different from the 1997 film. Much of the book's focus is on the 'benevolent fascism' form of government in this imagined future of Mankind, who encounter stiff competition from other life forms for possession of the few planets capable of supporting life.

Our liberals would never allow this.

In Singapore, a kid gets caned for keying a car. Result: Kids no longer key cars.
Our current Young Offenders Act was implemented by conservatives. Brian Mulroney to be specific.

They also cut your dick off for seeing prostitutes, shame our weak ass liberals do not have the courage to allow this.
Actually Singpore has lots of prostitutes and its quite liberal about the whole scene. The whole caning thing... I have mixed feelings about this. I have not seen the research but its really based on operant conditioning which is a well grounded psylogical principal

My wifes Grandfather worked as a CO in KP back in the 40's 50's after serving in the war. He was one of the CO's that administered the strap or in some cases the cat to prisoners. He told us usually after being strapped a prisoner was a lot more docile and better behaved for fear of a repeat. The prison ''tough guys'' were the ones who yelled hollered the most after receiving it. The cat of nine tails was reserved for rapists, pedos assaulting a Guard or sex assault in prison.

Using a different example, I think students back in my days were much better behaved than they are now where they are stabbing and shooting each other while still in their mid-teens. Why is that?

People talk about the brain not being fully developed until they are 25 or something like that to excuse bad behaviour. It doesn't take more than half a brain to know that stabbing someone is not nice.

I agree. It all depends on the context. There are some minors who are specifically committing the crime as a part of gangs and are specifically sent knowing full-well if they get caught they will be tried as a minor. In these situations I say being tried as an adult may benefit as a deterrent for gang members who think sending a minor makes any difference.

In these situations I think restorative justice may help as well. I’m not sure if we use that anymore in our justice system. Once again, how we punish or deter should really depend on the crime and the individual. Is this a young offender who is hardened and a repetitive offender or a lost one who still has a chance. So hard to answer ...

That's why I prefer caning (Singapore style :D ) to jail time for those minors, depending on the crime of course.
Jail may turn them into hardcore criminals, caning will just deflate their egos a little.
