My local Loblaw superstore was insane. The line for checking out was wrapped around half the store. Only 4 of the 12 cash registers were open. I'm sure folks were waiting 20 minutes plus in line.
The line for the 12 self checkout kiosks was about 15 carts deep. It actually moved fairly quick, about a 5 minute wait.
And all for this privilege of waiting our reward is to pay astronomical grocery prices. I had to do a double take when I looked at the bill.

If you can afford to shop at Loblaws, you got nothing to bitch about
I'm a bargain hunter when food shopping, and I regularly get some of my groceries at each of six different stores in my neighborhood. I stock up on heavily discounted items advertised in the flyers, but I'm too much of a food snob to clip coupons.
I highly recommend the Marhaba Supermarket at 324 Parliament Street, (just north of Parliament and Dundas East), for fresh meat, both for price and quality. The staff there are also very friendly. T-Bone steaks cut to whatever thickness you want are $5.99 a pound, and Halal meat is so much better tasting than what you'll find almost anywhere else.

There is to much shame in North America. Try the following mode of Transport: ( I know bike theft is rampant but you can get an Apple Air tag tracker.)
Also Only North America has this stigma about Bicycles. Japan ( +Asia) and Europe have the best for Bicycle alternatives.

I once read that prices were higher in grocery stores that had fewer car based shoppers. The theory was that people who walked or took public transit to the grocery store had little choice but to pay the higher prices. Those with cars could drive to stores with lower prices.
Superstore price matches and I have saved so much money going there. Plus, there are so many grocery stores in close vicinity to each other where I live. I buy a lot of salmon and meat and there are always good deals around

This thread turned out to be a fail. Seems like nobody on this board has concern over food inflation or potential shortages of necessary goods. But congratulations to you, you were the only one to attempt a guess at the amount of the bill.
The bill amount was $72.49 plus $4.56 HST for a total of $77.05.

I didn't guess because as a single individual with the above average income I don't really pay much attention to the prices on basic, everyday goods. Plus, no offence, there was nothing among your purchases that I'm familiar with.
You barely got any food and it's those 2 expensive items nexium and liquid plummer driving up the bill. Let play again next time.
I buy as I go about my business during the week. When things are on special I buy the maximum amount I can store. I buy fresh and perishables every 2-3 days, that way I do not have to buy at the last minute on busy days like today. I breeze in and out at non busy times.

I buy a pot roast and slice it into steaks and freeze them. When I am ready to cook I sous vide them and fry them to get a crust. Sous vide makes pot roast as tender as filet mignon.

Regardless of what your ( or my ) income is, there is no crime in saving a buck or being frugal. Being frugal is not the same as being miserly. For every dollar I save I can triple in a year. Let us all hope for the best, but you never know if we will be living in a dystopian Mad Max type of world in the future, given the current circumstances.
