What a slippery slope this one is...

New York City on Thursday became the largest municipality in the US to allow noncitizens to vote in local elections

In a vote of 33 to 14, the Democrat-controlled city council passed the measure known as "Our City, Our Vote."

Under the legislation, noncitizens who have lived in the city for at least 30 days and are legal permanent residents in the US -- including green card holders, individuals with workers permits and DACA holders -- will be allowed to vote in city elections, including mayor, public advocate, borough president and city council.

It's only a matter of time before other Democratic strongholds follow. This is just BAD and WRONG.

As if there's not enough "Election was stolen" claims to go around. Now this!

I always thought election laws were under federal control.
This bill is just for local elections. Regardless, it's plain fucking stupid. Government is based upon the consent of citizens. Full stop. You wanna vote? Get citizenship. It's not a vote for book club president.

Here are the lefty arguments. I think they do have some valid arguments.
1) No one is illegal.
2) They work hard.
3) They pay taxes.
4) One doesn't have to be a U.S. citizen to serve in the U.S. military, and it can be a route to American citizenship. Some got their American citizenship posthumously after being killed in combat serving the U.S.
"By mid‐2009, more than 119 immigrant military members had earned their citizenship posthumously after dying in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.” [Margaret D. Stock, Immigration Policy Center, 11/09] As Of 2008, The Highest Percentage Of Foreign-Born Military Personnel Was From Latin America and The Caribbean."

Could also be an excellent way for those outside of New York City to have significant influence on who is elected to local counsel and or mayor. if all you have to do is declare you were a resident for 30 days then pretty much anyone who wants to vote can vote.

Do you or do you not believe that people who live in a city should be allowed to vote for mayor of that city? Or borough president of the borough they live in?

If you’re a citizen you’re not a citizen of a country you shouldn’t have any right to vote in anything

I think anyone who pays taxes to the city should be allowed to vote. Tenants should get a receipt from their landlord stating that 40% or whatever of their rent is to pay taxes. The people in tent city can show that, not sure what they can show.

I know I pay way too much in municipal taxes so I should have a voice (vote?) on who should be managing my tax dollars.

You do know that the 30 days thing is what it always was.
New York City lets you vote in municipal elections if you have been a resident for 30 days.
That's not new.
Your evil plan to have people outside the city control it could have been done at any time.

1) No one is illegal.
People in the country unlawfully are not allowed to vote under the new rules.
It is only documented immigrants who don't yet have citizenship.

.......
if they pay taxes .......... collected by the city .... ie property taxes, they should have the right to vote

the wording is a little vague

noncitizens who have lived in the city for at least 30 days

it is not " noncitizens who have lived in the city for at least 30 days and currently reside in the city"

so if someone spent a summer in the city in 1996 and has not been back since , do they get to vote?

The text of the legislation is linked in the article.

The term "municipal voter" means a person who is not a United States citizen on the date of the election on which he or she is voting, who is either a lawful permanent resident or authorized to work in the United States, who is a resident of New York city and will have been such a resident for 30 consecutive days or longer by the date of such election, who meets all qualifications for registering or pre-registering to vote under the election law, except for possessing United States citizenship, and who has registered or pre-registered to vote with the board of elections in the city of New York under this chapter.
