Same thing is happening in LA to expensive shops in Beverley Hills and Rodeo Drive. Hi-end outlets are being closed, or boarded up with armed security guards. This stuff is starting to happen in Toronto as well.

Ok, it's NOT downgraded theft laws.

Petty theft is a misdemeanour everywhere. You're not going to jail random shoplifters. People who steal pairs of jeans and get caught don't belong in jail and it would overload the system to put them there. First time shoplifters are routinely diverted into non criminal sanctions streams in Toronto and have been for 30 years. They write apology notes and do 10 hours of community service or donate $100 to charity.

The people in the article are not "shoplifters". What they are doing is felony break and enter and felony robbery, depending whether they are breaking in at night or shoving and punching away attendants and grabbing stuff during the day. Those are serious crimes which gets a year or more jail time if the person is caught.

As well, professional career shoplifters in criminal organizations also get felony charges and do serious time. NY Post is full of shit.

Not a homeless problem in SF, most looters have vehicles and caused traffic...

And on top of that, a number of stores have policies where the staff are not allowed to confront shoplifters for two reasons: They don't want the liability of the employee or thief getting hurt, or the potential law suit if the employee makes a false arrest.

It really is a difficult thing to stop, and not just in California. Remember when there were videos of people stealing hockey bags worth of booze from the LCBO? Staff were instructed to no confront them, which led to an outcry by some shoppers and the media.

Spent 15 days in the US recently. I would say city centre I saw armed security in many shops and stores. Just like in Mexico. Actually due to shortage of staff the US will probably import mexicans to do that. The people Trump labeled as thugs will come back to secure them :ROFLMAO:

I think my reg is mistaken too. What would a homeless person do with swag from a hi end fashion store? I suspect that the Toronto people are copycatting ideas from organized, large-scale theft gangs in the US.

Because it's happening at high end stores in SF, the media reports it, it's an everyday occurrence on Queen Street West. Homeless and drug addict steal merchandise to sell it for cash and buy booze and drugs.

Yeah, those small jewelry stores probably don't have a ton of insurance and are family owned. They would probably fight to the death to keep the inventory....And I don't blame them.

Yup, just like the Koreans who took their long guns to the rooftops to protect their stores (their livelihood). Not everybody works for the LBCO or Beer store.
