Even better! I keep mine on in case somebody urgently needs to reach me, but your method is foolproof.

It scared the shit out of me! My phone is connected to my car while I drive and I was listening to music, loudly, and this just interrupted and was so loud and jarring, I jumped and swerved on the road. Stayed in lane but swerved

Also, my watch is a smartwatch and it is on vibrate so it was freaking me out because it vibrates differently when this alarm goes off and it doesn't stop.

This system is needed, I get that, but it is dangerous.

Some people are not able to do that. I can’t. I’m responsible for the caretaking of others. I need to be reachable 24-7.
If it's an APPLE their new IOS has options for whitelisting certain number - and blocking all others number while in Do not disturb mode

this is also an emergency broadcast system so if you disable it you would not know if there was an incoming nuclear explosion from Pickering power plant -

Except I need the phone open to new callers. Plus I have some friends who call from unknown numbers, and they wouldn’t be able to get through.

Its a good ideas for those who can do it.

It is really important to me too to be able to receive emergency calls.

Therefore, after I have turned my phone off, and after a long, uninterrupted night's sleep, I usually turn the phone back on again at some point...

I hear the amber alert and immediately go into action, like Batman or Perry the platypus. Honestly, there is a severe disconnect here, what do LE or political bureaucrats expect the population to do, jump into our cars and patrol the highway? I think the amber alerts should go to LE, security personnel, maybe tow trucks. Its just not smart to engage the general population.

They should design the Amber Alert so that only cellphones which are in motion can go off

It's the public that finds child abductors, not the police. The police depend heavily on sightings called in by the public. There is only about one police officer per 1000 people. That's why the Amber Alert system exists. The police cannot put attending to other crimes such as robberies and assaults on hold to devote the numbers needed to find one child.

The system works.

Lets HOPE some of the selfish A-holes posters above never have to suffer the loss, abduction of a child by some crazed individual. Too bad they were inconvenienced by an amber alert. Sad really. Guess its the society we now live in. All about me .

Almost all abductions are as a result of a family member involved with the disappearance of a child. The only case of the public alerting police of an abduction I’ve read was where a mother and her son were eating dinner at a restaurant and were recognized in the alert. If a crazed individual makes off with a child, the alert at best might make him afraid and change his mind. Then again he is a psycho to do it anyway and it may not.
