Which cities are we talking about? Timmons? Peterborough? Moncton? Whitehorse? Orilla? Need to know where I need to stay away from...
Peterborough and london are complete shitholes, is there any reason to think every other city isn't the same, except smaller ones?. I just saw an article on Woodstock having the same problems.

Tell me one city that isn't overrun with grifters and junkies?

Lived in Toronto for 78 years, was a great city back in the late 50s early 60s when it was the rock n roll capital in all of North America. Greatest bars, nightclubs and gorgeous girls everywhere and safe. Now it is totally over populated, everything is overpriced, rent is too expensive, roads way overcrowded. Wanted to move to a small town called Virgil in Niagara, daughter and grandchildren live in Ottawa, wife said noway to far from them. So here I stay.
Virgil is a nice small town with quick access to border and major highways.
Unfortanately the influx of GTA people moving down this way is driving up home prices and making it crowded. Plus the crime.

Toronto is overrated and is increasingly becoming more unlivable every year.

No need to sugarcoat it. That's why I made this thread. 😄
🤣🤣 I know but I got the terrible habit of being polite at all times :p

The longer I reside in Toronto , the more depressed the costs make me :p

Ottawa, ON for 4 years. Colder than a polar bear's toenails in the winter but beautiful in the summer. Occasional trips to the Bare Fax and Barbarellas although being on a students limited budget not a lot of private dances were had. Thursday nights were the best night to party, lots of drink specials. The Pit was great for live music their house band were called the Hammerheads and they put on a great show.

Edinburgh, Scotland for 1 year. Mostly work and little play. Was doing graduate courses. I shared a flat with my Irish cousin and his buddy from western Canada. Both were graduate students as well. Beautiful city, full of culture. Tons of students. Festivals throughout the summer. Great pubs. Was surprised to find quite a few Canadians there. So much so that I ended up playing in a recreational ice hockey league (mostly Canadian and Polish ex pats). The weather sucked, that was my biggest complaint. I think at one point it rained steady for almost two straight weeks. No strip clubs or massage parlors there as far as I know, but wasn't looking.

Limerick, Republic of Ireland. 9 months. Worked and volunteered through friends of the family. Dated a girl there for about 5 months. Sex was interesting without contraception. Had to master the pullout method. I didn't drive much there because its insane. People drive way too fast for the roads, which are nothing like here. For Irish standards its a pretty rough town, its nickname is Stab City. But close to some incredible scenery on the west coast. Golfed a bit and was able to visit my family in the North frequently. No strip clubs or anything of that nature. Ireland was strict back then.

But truth of the matter none of these places touch the Toronto I grew up in. Obviously I'm biased but there are way more things to do and see here. Still it was nice to see how other people lived.

You need to move to rural Quebec. Lots of open space, friendly helpful naighbours who can actually grow stuff and fix things, etc. Great for raising kids. Also, you can go swimming naked in the local pond.

I lived in Calgary for 3 years 3 lifetimes ago. Took advantage of the location to visit some western Canadian and northwestern American cities. I heard that Seattle, Portland and L.A. declined a lot since my last visit years ago.

Would love to live in Hawaii. Been there a few times. Even visited Halona Cove where Burt Lancaster and Debroah Kerr (what a woman!) did their famous beach scene.

Been to NYC so many times that I probably qualify as an honorary resident.

I think I'll eventually end up in Singapore where my university roommate is now the Chair and CEO of the family business. He and I were the original Odd Couple.

Montreal: more hype and attitude than substance.
Winnipeg: nice other than the mosquitos
Ottawa: nice scenery, fun stuff to do
Regina: complete hole
Tokyo: dirty, crowded, racist but always full of new cool stuff to see and do.

Memories of Tokyo. Will never forget those two Australian hostesses that the Japanese businessmen got totally polluted with some kind of drink.

Curious where people have lived. What cities, outside the GTA have you lived in?

Must have lived there for over 6 months.
I've lived in North Miami Beach for about 5 years. The beach was heaven the weather was perfect. However there were so many tourists it felt like it was one big gift shop. Meeting people from all over the world was interesting but when I thought about wanting a family one day of my own. It didn't have the vibe for me to do so there. So I moved back to Toronto and now I only go there to visit.

I've been to Hawaii many times aswell. Biggest downfall of living their is the cost of living. Everything has to be flown in or shipped in. Hydro cost changes constantly due to price of oil. Depending where you live it can be very crowded.
But if money wasn't a factor, it's a great place.

La la land
The downtown is becoming almost dystopian.
Every downtown in Canada + World is becoming a Dystopian gentrification mentality. Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville they are trying or already converting to attracting supposedly rich people into downtown, which I have no idea where these people are coming from , but as I read an article long time ago the bank + Gov are trying to put people in debt for a lifetime.

To me which I have traveled alot of places in the past 7 years, almost every downtown looked the same. I almost didn't see local culture or identity, just same old crap back home.

Maybe so but there is a marked difference in downtown Toronto post-Covid. Certainly something to do with the now lack of business/office people there, but the riff raff is more prevalent.

No city in Canada has any "culture". Liberals won't allow it.

Did you get a chance to visit Pearl Harbor? If yes, did you find that it is rather small?

Those ships at anchor on December 7, 1941 were sitting ducks.

Visited Hawaii in 1961 as a 20 year old with two friends, went to Pearl Harbour, was asked where we were from, told them we were Canadian, they asked if we were or had been in the Canadian Armed Forces, told them no, they said we were not allowed,no explanation, FN Americans.
