TORONTO -- To be an autoworker in Canada this year has meant living with a fair bit of uncertainty.

"There's no consistency," said Mark Sciberras, president of the Unifor local branch at Ford Motor Co.'s Oakville, Ont. operations. "One week to the next, you don't know if you're working."

The Oakville plant, like so many auto assembly lines globally, has seen its production start and stop numerous times this year because of the severe semiconductor chip shortage caused by pandemic-related production issues and a surge in demand for electronics.

These starts and stops aren't limited to the auto plants, nor related simply to the semiconductor shortage. There are a plethora of shortages spanning the gambit of manufacturing. Here's hoping the holiday season doesn't implode our whole trade system.

Is the Toyota plant In Cambridge or the Honda plant in Alliston working at less than maximum capacity? If they are not it is because they planned better or they were confident their products would sell and ordered supplies for future production. No chip manufacturer would refuse an order even in a pandemic. Once a consumer switches brands especially if it is to a superior product it is hard.to get them back.

“Hopefully” Tesla considers us in the near future for their upcoming Giga factory plants.😭 I do feel bad for what is happening to the workers and communities.

Apparently this is issue is under control with them ...

Just in time delivery was always slated to break down at some point.
The more you optimize for "efficiency" the less resilient the system is.

Its as much about supply chain. And its all domestic made vehicles. My Bro upgraded his purchase or it would have been a months long wait.

Port of LA is full with over 50 ships sitting offshore. No truckers to deliver.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've repeatedly pushed back against my boss's incessant need to "optimize" inventories (he's only concerned about the $$$). Shown him all the times it blew up in our faces, and that was before COVID. If it were completely up to him, we would have shut down long ago from lack of stock.

That’s more bullshit put out by the media and government. There are more trucks on the road than ever. Ports and rail yards are so inefficient. Takes hours to pick up a container.
I did state the ports are full. Its a confuence of things. Mostly pandemic related from having a no margin for error system. But the only way to clear the backlog is for trucks to move things out. I have friends waiting to recieve at their places of business and can't get it due to backlog.

So yes, not blaming truckers but they need more to handle it.
