They also caused one of the worst crimes, including genocide, in the history of humanity.

6. He was responsible for the deaths of as many as 40 million people.
While it’s impossible to know for sure how many people perished during the Mongol conquests, many historians put the number at somewhere around 40 million. Censuses from the Middle Ages show that the population of China plummeted by tens of millions during the Khan’s lifetime, and scholars estimate that he may have killed a full three-fourths of modern-day Iran’s population during his war with the Khwarezmid Empire. All told, the Mongols’ attacks may have reduced the entire world population by as much as 11 percent.

Long way to go to catch up to Chairman Mao. @ 70 million.

Yes, they were. No mercy given to their victims. But, were they much worse than others during the same time period?

I am now at the 30 minute mark of the video. The Mongols have advanced as far as Ukraine.

Interesting details about their battle strategies.

I can see some Asiatic features in many Russians (including Putin).

Maybe it is the Mongol blood in Putin that makes him so ruthless?
Until a couple of generations ago you could actually tell which Russians were from the unoccupied by Mongols parts of Russia. The 20th century Russians certainly behaved like their Asiatic cousins. Luckily for the rest of us, they were too busy murdering each other.

I heard that the Golden Horde never did return to Mongolia. Instead they married Russian maidens, settled down and became farmers.

I think some of Hitler's Wehrmacht soldiers met their doom at the hands of descendants of the Golden Horde in WW II.

One of the strangest aspects of the Mongols' legacy is that they reduced carbon emissions significantly through their massacres.

Interesting but a more important battle was fought at the Gates of Vienna in 1683.
Yes but in the Baroque Era European technology had already surpassed Ottoman firepower. That wasn't the case in the early 15th Century, the Ottomans were leaders in artillery. If not for Timur the Lame, Bazayid The Thunderbolt could have easily taken Constantinople and Vienna. The Renaissance was just getting started, Europe was way behind.

At that time the turning point was still 160 years away.
