People always say "is not about what you know but who you know". How do you meet people that can help advance your career?

For example, how does a start up company with no actual product able to secure funding to develop such product for years without making money. Can anyone share their experiences, just trying to learn.

Also attend industry events in your field if you can - or job fairs if you are hurting for work. Also check MeetUp for industry groups too.

I like these suggestions. I love meetup events myself to network but I dont think youll meet higher net worth people who can influence hiring decisions as much there. Conferences are fun but often a distraction and a lot of the decision makers attend briefly and head off to let their delegates run their booths. Think social clubs, wine clubs, golf clubs, luxury car meets, poker/charity events, other cultural or food events. Its a long term game and should be respected as such. Building relationships is more important than a simple meet. You may already have met several people who can help you in your career who youve disregarded or not nurtured the relationship, for example. Another thing I would say is focus on your own hobbies and rounding out your life as a person before trying to attract these people into your life. They will be drawn to you as a result.

I remember reading about a Financial Sales guy who started a Maserati Owners Club just to network with High Net-Worths and turn them into clients.

I personally don’t put much believe in LinkedIn. Valued people in different industries get spammed with many messages and such. In person events are key.

Gobs of folks there that move between companies or work at a company and move from project to project.
Small business owners ir indy contractors are there also too to get a wider picture.
On the web or in person meetings, and ongoing learning if that appeals to you

As far as getting hired somewhere, the best way to meet people that can help advance your career is to work alongside them somewhere, get their phone #/information, and then have them help you get hired at their new current company. Many people use nepotism as well. Getting your wife, kid, brother in law, etc. hired is very common I have seen.

Most people who want to connect off linkedin are on the lower rungs in their career and trying to move into the job they actually want (like me). The people who have already been quite successful (and could actually get you hired somewhere if they wanted) are happy with where they usually aren't looking to network with people they haven't worked with.

There are also a lot of sales people on linkedin who will connect, and then message you with "Hey, I was wondering if I could have a moment of your time and ask you a question about xyz?", which turns into a sales pitch as they seek out new clients.

you are right people who want to get their foot in the door use LinkedIn but attending events is key. The pandemic may shift this but those successful people like to see people in person and talk. Once they personally see your ambition and knowledge things start moving.

Coming from personal experience where I landed high level jobs in the past and still do.

All of them have came from friends/colleagues who shared a past interest in something either in the grey area of the law (but not illegal per se, but taboo) or something we enjoyed doing that was very specialized.

Example of the grey area was when I lived in Singapore, Hong Kong/Macau and NYC, I met a lot friends who were new to the area that were also into hobbying that I helped become acquainted to in the industry locally. Most were Investment bankers and lawyers, VC's. They helped me with many aspects of finding great jobs in the future, sometimes years later. My intention wasn't to use them for some gain, it just happened that I helped them when I could and some reciprocated later in life when I needed them.

Network with people in areas that you enjoy and are specialized. Build trust and rapport by making genuine friendships, help them when you can, don't expect anything in return and be grateful when they do. I now spend my days sitting/sleeping in a vehicle earning what most dentist and doctors make in Canada, with additional perks to boot.

make sure your car has AC for summer and heat for the winter. You wouldn't want to be sweating or freezing making all that money.
