"Moscow, Russia (CNN)The mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin has asked residents in the Russian capital to stay home in the coming week, declaring it a "non-working" week, to try and curb the spread of Covid-19.

"Over the past week, the situation with the spread of coronavirus has deteriorated sharply. The number of newly diagnosed COVID-19 cases has jumped to last year's peak values," Sobyanin wrote in his official blog. "In order to halt the increasing incidence rate and save people's lives, today I signed a decree setting non-working days from June 15 to June 19, 2021, with the preservation of wages for workers."

The decision does not apply to key workers as well as the military, the mayor said.

In addition to "non-working week," restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and other entertainment venues will be forced to close to costumers from 23:00 to 6:00, with the exception of takeout service.

Russia, a country of 140 million people, has reported over 5 million Covid-19 cases and nearly 124,000 deaths while administering nearly 33 million vaccine doses, according to data from John Hopkins University. Cases began to rise this week as the seven-day moving average shot up to over 10,000 cases a day.

The lockdown comes ahead of US President Joe Biden's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Wednesday in Geneva.

I'm surprised Russia hasn't imposed compulsory vaccinations a long time ago. They were the first out the gates with a vaccine but the population hasn't been getting jabbed. Time for Putin to get tough and make it mandatory or at the very least ask for Joe Biden or better yet, Justin to help him out.

Why does he want people to get vaccinated? COVID is very good thing for dictatorship - you stop any protests by claiming it help to spread the virus.

What you people should really pay attention to is the Covid spiking in the UK. They've surpassed our targets for vaccination; they're around 80/40 now, yet they're pushing back reopening.

So, what's your point; the vaccines don't work on Delta? That's not what the experts are saying.
The virus is spreading because the variant is more infectious & other reasons stated in the article.

It may be more infectious, but is it more deadly? If the vaccines can resist Delta then the infection rates are of little importance since, presumably, those most at risk had themselves vaccinated.

More infectious => more people get infected = > more people die = > more deadly.

If herd immunity hasn't been achieved, as evident by quickly increasing infections, then precautions to avert disaster are warranted.

The sooner the virus is contained worldwide the sooner will normalcy return and the less chance of VOC evolving to destroy human lives, even the vaccinated.

And, of course, we don't want to see hospitals overwhelmed, either.

That's not how it works. Covid can sweet through the nursing home and kill 25% of the residents. The same virus can sweet through a high school or a college and kill no one. That's why following the infection rates has always been a folly. Covid is a selective killer. There will be no return to normalcy in foreseeable future due to the spotty vaccines distribution throughout the world and our unwillingness to institute serious quarantine protocols for the overseas arrivals.

What?

Covid can sweet through the nursing home and kill 25% of the residents. The same virus can sweet through a high school or a college and kill no one.
True.

That's why following the infection rates has always been a folly. Covid is a selective killer.
Other things being equal, a more infectious virus will kill more people = it's more deadly. Hence the justification for greater preventative measures to contain it.

There will be no return to normalcy in foreseeable future due to the spotty vaccines distribution throughout the world and our unwillingness to institute serious quarantine protocols for the overseas arrivals.
Some places have already returned to mostly pre covid normal.
