Why does India have so many COVID cases?

"It is not entirely clear why this surge has happened in India, but it is likely to be because of crowded events organised in the run-up to elections – President Modi himself hit the campaign trail addressing election rallies in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on March 30 as the upturn of cases began. Large groups and social gatherings during religious festivals have also played a part, as well as the re-opening of public spaces and easing of lockdown measures which took place gradually throughout 2020 with the final “unlocking” of restrictions happening in December 2020.

There is also much concern about the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus in India. It is thought the dominant strain in the country now is the variant which was first identified in the UK, and which has shown to be up to 60 percent more transmissible between humans.

On March 25, it was further announced that a new “double mutant” variant had been detected in India, now known as the “Indian variant”. This development is what has other countries spooked.

The Indian authorities do not think this new variant has yet become the dominant COVID strain in the country, but it is likely to be contributing to the increasing numbers.

...Pressure urgently needs to be lifted off the healthcare system and the only way to do that is to ramp up the vaccination programme, strengthen social distancing procedures and re-introduce lockdown measures.

It's obvious by just looking at the news videos of what's going on there: aside from a huge and dense population, even though they wear masks, they ignore social distancing guidelines.

That was a frightening and sobering article. Thanks @Lenny for posting a newsworthy link. I have friends from there. Truly horrifying. These variants are literally becoming the plague. India's living conditions are ideal breeding grounds for a plague. Covid 3.0 makes Covid 1.0 look like the sniffles.

Prediction: Won't be long before agency SP's start imposing new restrictions what ethnicities they will and won't see. And Brampton incall sites will dry up like a clam at low tide. (That was a pun.)

On the news last night. Short of supplies of everything. Seemed bewildered by it. Don't know why it's so surprising. Overpopulation might be a clue.

I don't have the stats but based on "livable" space is India any more or only a little more densely populated than say the U.K., France, Indonesia, Iran, etc.? Here in Canada we have a huge land mass but the population is almost entirely along a narrow east-west corridor along the U.S. border.

Probably has already started on the DL. Me thinks some brown guys were left standing by the door this past weekend.

I just don't understand, stay at home people, no need to gather for such ceremonies, events religious gatherings. Put a hold on this until it is safe. Now that you didn't listen, you are begging the world for help.

I suppose same thing would have happened to us Westerners if we didn't stop going to church and having large weddings and funerals. Oh wait a minute! It still happened to us. Does that mean the virus spreads no matter what we do? Masks or no masks, social distance or social closeness, eat in restaurants or take out, cbj or bbbj?

If you listen carefully enough, you just might hear the Coronavirus laughing. (Or was that the guy downstairs?)

True - but if we do our part part by staying home when the rules are in place at least we can control the acceleration of the virus. The virus is def. here to stay until we get a sense of control but in the meantime - lets control the acceleration of it.

I agree that we the people need to do our part to decrease the acceleration of the spread. Just very frustrating when the Federal government keeps importing new variants. It is like we are running a marathon and they [the Feds] keep moving the finishing farther and farther away.

Covid restrictions make it spread to a lesser degree than it would have otherwise.

The greater the restrictions, the lesser the spread of infections.

Lockdown everyone for a few weeks & covid is all but exterminated.

That's why quarantine's are so effective.

Population of India = 1.38 billion with 346,000 new cases today.

Population of Canada = 38 million with 7200 new cases today.

1.38 e 9 / 38 e 6 x 7200 = 261,000 cases

261k/346k = 76 percent

So adjusted for population, Canada is at about 76 percent of where India is at.

So India might be doing terribly, but we are not far behind.

Unfortunately for India they are way behind Canada in vaccinations.

1.7% to roughly 32%.

In simple terms, Modi channeled his inner Trump.

Modi is now resorting to censorship and is underreporting the covid numbers. I guess he doesn't need Canada's help anymore.

Modi has started to underreport covid numbers. So I take your numbers with a grain of salt.

In Brampton, Canada is also 76 percent where India is. The other 24 percent are white.
I think I know what you mean.

BTW: I noticed "Derek Williams" with the thick E.I. accent hasn't called me recently to say I owe the CRA $1,100 and the RCMP has a warrant for my arrest. LOL!
