In a right thinking world it would have been "speed kills Del" Murdock, the best caricature of a tv and stereo shop owner ever. Alas it was not to be.

Tim Reid didn't star as the lead in Sister Sister, the Mowry sisters were the leads.
The New WKRP doesn't really qualify, since it was an ensemble cast with no one as a lead.

Yes, he was hit by a falling studio light. No amount of makeup could cover it up -they had to use a bandage. Richard Sanders was the one who took that ball, ran with it, and made it a running gag.
Tim Reid playing the criminal that was arrested for robbery of a jewelry store that was a dead ringer for Venus Fly Trap, does that count?
I had forgotten about that. That episode is actually a clue as to the identity of two of the other actors, though.

Variety shows were videotaped and got the cheaper licensing fee for music, so WKRP found a loophole.
