In a press release Thursday, the government said it’s investing in Technology company FaceDrive Inc. The company has been hired to develop a wearable tracing technology for people who work or spend time in facilities where smartphone use is limited.

The bracelet, called TraceSCAN, will be a stand-in for the COVID Alert app. If someone is working somewhere that smartphones use is limited, it means their COVID Alert app won’t be effective in detecting close-contact to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. The bracelet, like the app, will be able to track exposure with out GPS information.

The $2.5 million investment, from the Ontario Together Fund, will help Facedrive Inc. manufacture about 150,000 devices and create 68 new jobs in the province.

TraceScan will also beep or vibrate if the wearer gets closer than 2m to someone else wearing the device.

I’m on the fence with this.

First I get that money inequality is a real issue and many don’t have cell phones or data plans so this is a good idea for that.

However, how much is this actually going to used, in populations where it would be effective to justify the cost? Did anyone message the cost of giving actual phones to people? So they serve dual purposes. Poor people have a hard time getting services they need because there are no in-person appointments available and they don’t have a phone to call. Not like there are pay phones anymore and you can’t go to the neighbours to borrow theirs. Why not kill two birds with one stone.

Also that money could go to more vaccination centres, more stimulus packages to help now that we are a year into this and many are still not working.

So did we need this now, a year later, when vaccines are out and hopefully the world is a turning a corner right now? Probably not.

The concept is good, more thought could have made it much better, and if not, then that money could have gone into something better to help the COVID fight.

The money can def. be used elsewhere - will stick to my mask. What a waste - who in their right minds would wear this. How is this company getting all this money and their stock is so high yet they show no revenue. I just don't get it.

It's for people who do not have depth perception in case they can't tell how far 6 feet is.

Have to love how wasteful the government is in spending your money. But the covidiots are going to be the biggest cheerleaders of this.
Doubt many people would think this is a good expenditure (and many will suspect that Ford or one of his buddies has a financial interest in the company).

BTW. Stupid headline; it is the same as the covid app and just notifies you if you've been in contact with someone who tested positive, not just if other people are near.
