So here is the story,

I was out shopping at SuperStore. I was at the cashier and using my phone to do price matching. I must have put the phone down on the conveyer belt when I went to bag and pay for my food. I left completely not even thinking about my phone. I get home and realize it is gone. I use the Find my Phone app and it is in Brooklin. So I know it is stolen.

I go to the location, knock on the door. A woman opens the door slightly, I think there was one of those locks on the door that let you open it only a little. Anyway, she kept saying her husband wasn’t home and I had such a hard time trying to communicate with her. She acted like she didn’t understand me at all, saying she didn’t understand English. She was East Indian and I couldn’t understand what she is saying. But according to another thread, I can’t ask her to repeat herself or talk slowly because then I am a racist.

I’m clearly not getting anywhere. I used the App to disconnect the iPhone so it can’t be used. I leave because I was getting no where. I called the non emergency police number who are really no help at all.

I go home and I am pissed. I wake up the next morning and head there at like 8am. This time the husband does open the door. And I say straight out, “give me back my fucking phone now!”

Of course he goes on about not having it, get off his property, etc. I use my watch to ping my phone and doesn’t work. So now I am thinking maybe it is not there. But then I use my iPad with the app to ping the phone and sure enough, you hear it going off and it doesn’t stop until you stop it either in the app or on the phone. I guess the watch didn’t work because the phone was locked. I say give me the iPhone or I am calling the police. My daughter comes up to the house and shows them she has dialled 91 and hands me the phone, I say I am pressing the other 1. The wife comes with the phone

Then it is all sorry, we though it was our phone, {i think that it what he said, again, I can’t understand half of the words they are using, but suddenly the wife understands me now even though the day before she pretended she didn’t understand English}, the phone is still binging, it is all loud and emotions are high. My daughter is walking away calling them every name in the book.

I tell them they are fucking assholes for stealing the phone. I looked right at her, call her a “C” word for lying about not understanding English. Call them other names as I am walking away. They close the door and we go home with my phone.

I swear, thinking back, they must have grabbed it right off the belt. Which I get it my fault for putting it down, but if they didn’t grab it, the cashier and I would have found it, when she moved the conveyer to her with the rest of the groceries. This couple was easily 40-50s years old. WTF are they going to do with a phone that needs facial recognition and locked. Someone said they can still sell it. It is a Xs so it is not that old and still has value apparently. From what others have told me.

But WTF is wrong with people. I would never think of stealing like that. I don’t think about stealing at all but that is brave. Right in front of me basically. I would never have thought an older couple like that would scoop a phone like that.

I am still mad and feel I shouldn’t have walked away but I should have still called the police. I did call the non emergency number again, and they said that I can still file a report but most likely, they won’t be charge because other then my word, there is no proof. And I keep location services off, so I can’t show where it was. Even though that would not make much of a difference because it doesn’t prove it was in the house. Even doing that only gets them possibly a procession charge, not actually stealing the phone. So this couple will get away with it and probably steal from someone else now.

This is one of those things that will I will remember randomly in 5 years and it will still piss me off.

First - happy to hear you are safe, secondly - I am so happy for you for getting your phone back, losing your phone is crazy stress - because our lives are so wrapped up in these devices. Finally these people are scum - no need to steal anything - if its on the belt common person would just pick it up and tell the cashier - that would be my first instinctual move. Amazing what people would do - wtf r u so desperate you need to steal a phone and try to make a few hundred bucks. I would've still called the cops just to fck them up. Glad everything worked out though for you.

That was quite an adventure.
Good on you for having all the technology set up to do what it's meant to do.

If I saw someone forget to pick up their phone (or any other thing) at the cash, I'd just say "Excuse me, is that your phone?".
Disappointing to hear someone would do what they did.

I would still file the report.
You have enough detail to make it very credible.

Advise the police of what has happened regardless.
It's about identifying an occurrence, a pattern of criminal activity and behaviour.
If they did it once, they've done it before and they'll do it again.
The police will now have them on their radar if there not on it already.

.....
Early on you said your phone is in Brooklyn.
Is this the Brooklyn in New York state? Is that where you live?
Did the app mess up?
I'm confused. Help me out here.

Where did I say I called them racist terms???? I called them assholes, I called her the “C” word. That would apply to any race..

I have no problem calling them those things. There are assholes for stealing my phone and she is a “C” for lying and playing like she didn’t understand English. If anyone was playing any race anything, it was her playing like because she is EI, she doesn’t understand English.

What am I suppose to say? Thank you for finally giving me back my phone after I had to prove you stole it. I appreciate your choice to finally do it. LOL, I think not

This simply reminded you that bad people exist and they can be next to you.

You got your phone back. Consider yourself lucky. It could've been something untraceable.

You can get mad or you can learn a lesson. Don't leave valuables unattended and be mindful of surroundings.

If you still feel rage and want to get back at them - burn their house. That'll teach em! 🔥

Part of my anger is my own stupidity. Trust me on that. It was my bad for putting my phone down.

I have learned a lesson for sure.

She didn't say anything racist. The reveal was to illustrate the point that the woman was pretending not to understand. The fact that she was of the race mentioned makes the incident less surprising, than say if they had been.....any other race.

Lesson learned, make sure you are aware of your personal belongings and surrounding. It is very convenient to blame someone else for one's own mistake.
There are opportunists in this world irrespective of race, language or religion who have no conscience and will take from anyone they can.

I would think there's a good chance all this was caught on store security camera. I don't know if they'd allow you to request seeing the store footage. You should do a police report anyway. I highly doubt this was that couples first scam. Good people don't do what they did. Maybe this might be a case of them fucking over the wrong person who bring their whole house of cards down.

^^^^ I can’t quote you @Greytop19 but I want to explain this. I mentioned the race because she was using her race to play games and lie. She used her “race card” to play those games.

Also, having personally dated men of EI decent, I’m not an idiot to who is EI when speaking to them. Also, I didn’t think it was necessary but I could describe clothing etc but I don’t get hung up on race. It is not my thing.

But for the story, the detail of race was important. She made it important with her lying.

What is the app you use?
It is called “Find my IPhone”. It comes with all Apple products or you can access it by logging into ICloud.com

That is an idea. I could ask how they make those types of recordings accessible and available to police.

Just like the lady who left her phone in an Uber but then blamed a young black man of theft.
I am taking responsibility for my part. I put the phone down somewhere that was not my purse. But they are culpable for their part which was stealing the phone from the conveyer belt. They saw it and scooped it. If they had left it, it would have been seen for me to grab before I left the cashier.

Just because I have responsibility in this, doesn’t mean they don’t either. They do. It is not one sided.

I have an Android phone. Maybe, I'll look into something similar. I have had my phone stolen twice but my phones cost about $150 so I didn't get too pisst.

It was in Langley, BC both times where a lot of drug users love living and often happen to be blonde females around gas stations. Race doesn't matter but poverty level (or drug addiction) is a good indicator of chance of theft. Never leave phone or keys on top of car while pumping gas. It can disappear when you go in to pay and forget it on car roof.

Present it so there might be something in it for them as well. I'd bet the farm this couple are serial shop lifters and did during that same shop.

I would file a police report as there should be store footage of it. Was your daughter video taping them returning it to you with her phone? I believe the cops are obligated to take the report.
