Well.... You could say that the cops are only involved when things are about to get out of hand as well. So the argument is circular.

You could but it wouldn't be right. If I remember the literature correctly, the evidence tends to support that the Police coming out with a force presence is the major factor. If they come looking for trouble, they will find it.

As usual, the devil is in details: in this case in who and how categorised protest into violent and non-violent. The article states that 93% of BLM was non-violent and I am having hard time believing in this number without additional information on how the distinction has been made.

Then its up to you to prove those numbers are wrong.
Contact went so far as to find a different study but it said 94% were peaceful.
So that's 2 for 2.
