What if there was no vaccine?
Every action and reaction to deal with the Coronavirus fallout since the outbreak in March 2020, has been tempered with a potential vaccine looming on the horizon just a scant year into the future.
Imagine you are waiting for the bus in minus 30 temperatures and there is no shelter but the schedule has a bus arriving in just 8 minutes, knowing that in 8 minutes you will be in a warm comfortable place makes the conditions which you are waiting under much more tolerable, because there is an end to your discomfort just minutes away, so, you tough it out.
What if you found out the bus wasn’t coming?
What if there was no vaccine?
How long would we be in lockdown? How deep would we let the cut get that sees our businesses covering their windows in newspapers? How long would it take for the Canadian government to start building facilities specifically for treating victims of the virus for which there is no vaccine. How long before the government stopped banging the drum that our medical facilities are overloaded and actually do something to change or increase the facilities instead of threatening people to stay in their basements.
How long can people stay in their basements? and considering that seems to be the primary resolve that the government is clinging to who can we look to for more sensible long-term solutions?
I haven’t heard of one strategic plan that deals with the bus not coming. Considering this is a possible future and Corona is mutating shouldn’t we be laying out the framework that gives us comfort in knowing there is at least a plan?
Where is the military in all this? Haven’t we invested billions in military infrastructure? Mel Lastman activated the military after a fucking snowstorm shouldn’t this situation see triage units being set up across the country? Triage units that deal with all Corona patients keeping them out of pre-existing medical facilities? That would allow for our medical facilities to deal with the world and its population that has not changed, people are still having heart surgeries and breaking legs why are we intermingling the two? They should by now be completely disconnected, hospitals operating as they always have, and triage outposts dealing strictly with Corona.
Look how fast China built massive facilities for treating just Corona victims, what has the Canadian government done?
Allowing the economy to struggle along despite the virus would generate the money to build facilities treating just Corona victims until they are not needed, it would limit small business collapse, it would generate the revenue to sustain those medical facilities as we move into an uncertain future so at least there is the pre-existing infrastructure to deal with whatever tomorrow may bring and in doing so minimize the damage to our economy giving people reassurance and comfort in knowing the best we can do is what we are doing instead of what is happening right now.
What the government is doing now? As far as I can see, is creating a wasteland, making the worst of a bad situation, filling people unnecessarily with fear and desperation, destroying our economy, and eroding the confidence people deserve to have knowing that the fucking bus is coming.
