I don't know that much about South Cabbagetown (wasn't it gentrified?) but it sounds like it is now populated with 30 something liberal/NDP types. I also don't know that much about Leaside either.

What I do know is that I'm glad I don't live in either ward. Sorry if I don't sound compassionate enough.

There is no way that you can compare these areas. Cabbage town was always a very down trodden area. Lived there for a few years as a 10-12 year old back in the early 1950s. Some parts have improved quite a bit, but can never be compared with Leaside where I live now. I think it was more ndp than liberal.

Police aren't able to be proactive anymore and there's a lot of bad people out there. This is a glimpse into what things will look like if the 'defund the police' movement actually takes hold. The wealthy will hire policing while the poorer neighbourhoods, hitting the most vulnerable, will bear the brunt of the inevitable increase in crime.

Wrong. It is the right wingers that are the ones telling people how to run their lives. Religion and major institutions of power/corporations/banks are the ones that affect everyone's lives. Liberals and NDPers are not running them for the most part.

You are probably not Irish. During the Irish potato famines in the mid-1800's many poor Irish came to Canada. Many settled in what is now Cabbagetown (many others settled in Catholic Quebec). These amazing Irish immigrants grew cabbage in their front yards -- hence Cabbagetown got its name.

Yes, my grandma was born and raised in Cabbagetown. In the 30's and 40's her family and other families were still growing cabbages in their front yards.

Cabbage is easy to grow. And yummy.

It’s has really changed in a short amount of time.......WOW.

By looking at the map, Cabbage Town is actually adjacent to Rosedale where it's the richest neighbourhood in Canada. The two neighborhoods are only separated by Bloor St.E and share the same Metro Station: Castle Frank.

It seems that the great thing in Canada is the rich and poor can coexist and live next to each other with peace.

It would be nice if the riches in Rosedale donate half of their wealth to the poors in Cabbage Town. Then it will make everyone happy and go into their grave at the end of their lives with peace and happiness.

I just read the news today that ex-wife ( MacKenzie Scott ) of the world's richest man (Amazon owner - Jeff Bezos ) has donated more than $4 billions US dollars to various charities and organizations such as poor and mostly black community colleges in America where the spending on each student typically very low comparing to the elite / Ive League and mostly white / Asian universities in America.

It's one of the unspoken aims to "civilize" certain neighborhoods by erecting small developments for well to do Torontonians. The problem with that is that the poor have to go somewhere. The hope was to just squeeze them out by attracting higher income inhabitants and the better quality of services and retail. It would have worked, too, if the poverty levels stayed constant. Unfortunately, Toronto is the magnet for the transient as all very big cities are and that approach will never work. The courageous thing to do would have been to work out a deal with the major developers to construct mid size apartments in the subsidized strata among the already established neighborhoods across the city.
