I don't think so. After the initial accusations it looks like the family was trying to step back from this. And save face. I think they will this time.

The lawyer said that once you are "detained" by police then anything that happens to you is the police's fault. The family, obviously, is just looking for a payday. Somewhere former Chief Saunders must be having a nice chuckle.

I was "detained" by police twice. Both times as a witness. One time I saw a man punch a woman in the face in a store. The second time I was on a TTC bus involved in an accident. I think, but I'm not sure, I think I could have walked away in both cases but I wanted to do my civic duty so I stayed.

The cops were in a no-win situation here. They had two choices. Rush out onto the balcony or stay put. They chose to not rush the balcony and the girl fell to her death. The family is blaming them for not saving her.

Had they gone after the girl and been on the balcony when she fell, they would’ve been blamed for causing her death.

Or imagine how outraged the public would’ve been had the cops grabbed and restrained the girl when they got there. BLM would’ve been all over that.

A cousin who goes by the name Roc'a Veli lied and said he SAW police "throw her off the balcony". The Mom was already understandably in shock and trauma by the death of her daughter, it was the cousin who amped her up when she first talked to the media. She/the family had to subsequently back off from that story line when it was proved to be untrue.

Meanwhile the cousin is spreading conspiracy theories and smear campaigns that Canadian police are wilfully killing Black people by throwing them from balconies, citing other examples of Blacks falling or jumping from balconies during emergency police calls.

To date the family has received approx $650,000 via three "JUSTICE FOR REGIS" Gofundme accounts, two of which are still active: $479k/$145k/$10k
