Personally I even consider them to be in the same genre. Star Trek is science fiction but Star Wars more like a Western or Samurai film that just happens to be set in space

It is a classic fantasy trope.

Young Knight of unknown heritage is forced into a quest accompanied by and old Knight/wizard, a rogue and a motley collection non humans to save a princess from the forces of evil from an impenetrable fortress and save the day.

Yeah, I thought the original Star Wars story line was fairly basic. When we watched it the first time, we were impressed with the special effects.

Now that the franchise holds no special effects advantage, I'm less excited about the series.

Star Trek

Especially the TV shows (except Discovery, which is fucking awful) is better on the whole than Star Wars.

The first 3 Star Wars films (Episodes iv, v and vi) were great. The second three (Episodes i, ii, iii) were all unwatchable they were all so bad. Of the last 3, Vii and ix were good, but not great, Viii was awful.

But how far can you take the theme of a civil war in space? They simply ran out of story. So much so that in the last 3, (episodes 7, 8 and 9), they basically recycled the plot lines from the first three movies.

With Star Trek, because it's a far more wide open show based around the concept of "The Federation", you have virtually limitless possibilities.

My personal preferences are:

1. The Next Generation TV Show
2. The Original Series TV Show

I could watch just about any episode from the above shows at any time and never be bored.

After that, it was really hit and miss. I never really got into Deep Space 9 or Voyager. If anything, I was more into Enterprise with the exception of the tech in the show. Because it was set before TOS by several generations, they needed to dumb down the technology and they lost me a bit there. I was a HUGE fan of NCC-1701. How many times she got pounded and you thought that "well, this is it" but somehow Kirk and crew managed to pull off a miracle. I felt like the Enterprise WAS a character on the TOS.

I mean, I choked up when I was a kid and saw Star Trek 3 in the theater and they blew her up. I still shed a tear when I see this scene. (I just finished watching it twice.) I mean, they can go through the alphabet all they want, but for me, there is only one Enterprise.
