A 37-year-old mother and her three daughters were killed in a horrific multi-vehicle crash in Brampton Thursday afternoon.
The call came in at 12:16 p.m. Thursday for a crash at Torbram Rd. and Countryside Dr.
“There was a four-vehicle collision with several people injured with varying levels of injuries,” Peel Regional Police Const. Akhil Mooken told media at the scene.
One of the children, a six-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two children are aged one and four.
Sources tell the
Toronto Sun the mother was Karolina Ciasullo, who was travelling with her daughters Klara, 6, Lilianna, 4, and Mila, 1.
A
GoFundMe campaign created for the Caledon family has already surpassed $45,000.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation, following reports that police were attempting to follow a speeding vehicle just prior to the deadly crash.
Police sources tell the
Sun a blue Infiniti driving eastbound on Countryside Dr. was driving erratically and sped away when a passing Peel Police cruiser turned on its lights to pull it over.
After the car bolted away at high speed, the officer turned off its lights and continued to follow as it ran a red light and collided with a white van driving northbound on Torbram.
That van collided with a utility pole, toppling it and sending live wires to the road below.
The driver of the blue Infiniti, which sources identified as 20-year-old Brady Robinson, was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Robinson, who suffered a broken leg injury, apparently had a prohibited licence and police received a call 30 minutes before the crash about the erratic driving.
This incident is also being investigated as a possible impaired driving case, say sources.
Peel police officers feverishly tried to revive the children.
“It’s so upsetting,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown. “It’s such a beautiful family. I am so angry. I am furious this happened and heartbroken for their family and for the whole community.”
Even worse, this reckless 20 year old driver had a prohibited license for multiple driving offenses.
He had plates that didn’t match his car. He only has a broken leg but his victims have had their lives stolen.
This is criminal negligence causing death. He belongs in jail.
Brown said he is also “very concerned” about the Peel officers who tried to save the family.
“I have asked that they get PTSD help right away,” he added. “I was talking to them and they are shaken up. They all tried to save them. One female officer was found (performing) mouth-to-mouth on (the baby). It’s so sad. “
As for the person causing the accident having a prohibited license — “this scum deserves to go to jail for life for killing this family,” Brown said.
“To have a suspended licence is one thing but to have a prohibited licence is a whole other thing. I want to know everything about this. What happened before, to end up with a prohibited licence,” he said.
SIU spokesman Monica Hudon said the investigation is still in its early stages, and is appealing witnesses to submit any video recordings that could help them piece together what happened.
In the meantime, the officers at the scene were upset and shaken at the loss of life, reminding everyone that when a police officer asks you to pull over it’s not only the law, it makes for a safer community.
“This is a devastating, devastating incident,” said an emotional Mooken.
“As a parent, when I first saw this call come across, the first thing I could think of was my own daughter and trying to imagine the pain that family was going to be facing.”
