Today marks the one year anniversary of the death of Melvin Edmonds. He was part of my favorite r&b group of all time - After 7. Alongside brother Kevon (both older brothers to Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds) and Keith Mitchell they formed the group After 7 in 1987. In 1989 they released their self titled debut album. It spawned 2 #1 hit singles - Ready or Not and Can't Stop. They would go on to release 2 more studio albums and 1 compilation album in the next 8 years before disbanding. In 2016 they reunited to release an album called Timeless, albeit without Melvin. Instead his son Jason filled in his place. Melvin had faced substance abuse issues for several years and was not in good health. His voice was big and rangy and was described as a throwback to the classic soul years. Melvin sang verses one and three on the following track, Nights Like This, which appeared on The Five Heartbeats soundtrack. Salute. RIP.
