Mike Layton Proposes to Ban Right Turns on Red

O

OnTheWayOut

Yesterday I was behind a police car and was at a red light. The car in front of him stopped, then made the right turn on red. The cop just rolled right through it. Even worse it was in a construction zone! I continued to follow the cop as he slowed but never stopped at three stop signs. Yeah, I get it, this cop may be an exception. But if the ones who are to enforce the laws do not follow them, what is the use of the laws?

If a car needs to slow or alter his driving in any way because of a vehicle making a turn on red, the person making the right turn on red did not do it properly or legally. Period.

That only means more drivers will make right turns on red. If there is no enforcement, what's the point of putting this into law?

It is okay to have no right turn on Rd lights especially in high pedestrian intersections but what should be done is to have advanced right turn green arrows for vehicles while pedestrians have a red light similar to advanced left turn green arrows. This would help eliminate long vehicle line ups waiting for pedestrians crossing the street on green lights while waiting to make a right turn. This is common in many European cities such as Copenhagen and it works great. They even have traffic light signals for cyclists only which also works great. Of course the difference is the cyclists there OBEY the road signs unlike the idiot cyclists in this city where no one does.

This is just another stupid Toronto city council idea to appease to pedestrians . It's already difficult enough to turn right in Toronto. Now you'll have cars waiting forever since they can't turn right on red, and can't turn on green since pedestrians will be crossing.
This is exactly the problem with the way it is now. With the crosswalk signals having that countdown timer, pedestrians keep crossing the intersections right until the light turns yellow. Worst decision ever for traffic. I think scramble intersections would be better.

The island of Montreal has no right turns on red. So they have traffic problems in their downtown area with the volume of pedestrians that don't follow the crosswalk signals. Makes is frustration trying to drive in that area.

Cheers

In Mississauga I have encountered as a pedestrian some traffic lights that go green for cars but not for pedestrians, at all. Waited for that walk signal so long the light turned red and the cars running perpendicular went again. And yes I had hit the little pedestrian button. Next cycle I crossed the street on a don't walk sign still showing.

BTW you folks should see the intersections in some places around the world, where there are tons of cars and NO traffic lights. The traffic just weaves through anyway and it's amazing to watch.
