Unlike Bobby "the suckass vampire" Clarke, Bobby Orr could handle himself. He did eventually fight Pat Quinn and, correct me if I'm wrong, Dave Schultz as well. Don Awrey was his defensive partner, a stay at home defenseman that no one wanted to fight. He wasn't on the Bruins teams that faced the Canadians in the late 70's.

I never considered King Clancy a stooge, the Leafs played beyond their talent when he came in as emergency coach. One year he took over for Mike Nykoluk and took them to the playoffs.

As for tml most embarrassing loss it was a game not long after that set the Leafs on their destiny of futility. They were played the newly relocated Calgary Flames and lost 7 -1..
The Atlanta Flames relocated to Calgary for the 1980-81 season.

That was one of my earlier exposures to hockey, not long after my parents decided to stay in Toronto.

Bobby Orr was protected, his linemate was someone no one wanted to fight: Don Awrey. The Leafs had a psychopath named Forbes Kennedy who tried to take on the entire Bruins team, Awrey decided to stop the nonsense and bloodied him. While they were entangled Kennedy head butted Awrey then punched the linesman. Correct me if I'm wrong but Kennedy was suspended for life.

Ooops my memory isn't that great, now I'm not quite sure if Awrey and Kennedy fought. It was quite a freakshow.

MY memories:
That 10-0 was the 1st game. They played game 2 the next night and they lost that one 6-0.

Forbes Kennedy was crazy yes, but Jim Dorey played almost as big a role. I remember that as things had cooled off and the players were milling around Dorey skates up slowly behind Eddie Shack, calmly taps him on the shoulder and when Shack turned around Dorey clocks him and it was round 2 of the brawl. Truly crazy.

I remember thinking that if somebody in the crowd had a gun, Pat Quinn would have been shot for the hit he put on Orr.

On a side note, the title and announcer got it wrong. The referee was John Ashley and he did not get punched. The linesman who did get hit was Matt Pavelich who had one of the longest careers of all. He retired after 23 years and 1,727 regular season games, second only to Neil Armstrong. He also officiated 245 playoff games, second only to John D'Amico.

that gcostanza, he hate me.

I got the date wrong, assumed tml meant the fall on 1980. Jiri Chra faced 50+ shots, he was never the same after that.

I shit in Bobby Clarke's mouth. The dirtiest player to ever play hockey, he constantly used his stick as a weapon and got away with it. He took a two-hander to Valeri Kharmalov's ankle during the Summit Series, he and the rest of the Philadelphia candy ass pissboys can eat shit and die.

Mel Bridgeman could have paralyzed Borje Salming when he cross-checked him into the boards. What happened to the Philedalphia candy asses when they went up against a real hockey team?

Still my favorite Leaf. I heard he got into the nose candy late in his career. Can't blame him really, he was playing for Harold Ballard. The current team could REALLY use him.

he did give kharmalov a whack, but if you take into accoumt that the russians had the fix in when canada got to russia, it was worthy in my opinion. kharmalov played the next game, get over it.

Clarke's slash broke Kharmalov's ankle, he missed the deciding game. Clarke speared Rod Seiling in the gut causing him to cough up blood. The Iron Shaek should fuck Clarke's ass and make him humble. Get over it.

But you factor in Marchand and Bergeron on a mission, it really wasn't that unlikely after all. Hate them all you like, one of the best, most committed and most intense lines ever to play the game. (And even better now with DP alongside them). Class and quality shows in the crunch.

I remember the Bruins totally dominated play for the last 10 minutes and the Leafs looked like they got run over by a tank. It wasn't luck; it was just a better team doing what it needed to do. The Leafs looked like a helpless rat being dismembered and torn apart methodically and relentlessly by a big, nasty tomcat!
You're making it sound like it was a fait accompli just because of those players.

The fact is Toronto was dominating that game, they forechecked the Bruins D into the ground, they couldn't make a decent breakout pass.
They played with so much speed and aggression, the last time I've seen that really.
Third period comes out, they completely turtle, one guy high at the Boston blueline with everyone else sitting back between Centre Line
and Leaf blueline. Boston started winding up their guys in their end and coming in in waves.
I was screaming at the TV, I couldn't believe what the Leafs were doing.
That was Carlyle's doing and I hated him ever since.

The Leafs totally gave that game away when all they had to do was keep pressing in the third like they did all game.

Not at all.
According to you, the initial game you referenced was 1969, then mentioned the Leafs playing the Calgary Flames not long after.
No hate involved, IV.

Talk about over-reacting. Worse game ever? Come on get real. Give credit to Canes. They came out with intensity and protected the goalie. I don't think Leafs got one good scoring chance in the 3rd period. Any goalie would have won that game. Leafs on the other hand were too casual thinking it would be easy. No intensity whatsoever.

As a Leafs fan I could only hope that they’ll play their hearts out not only tonight but the rest of the season after suffering that humiliation. They may not have the horses to do much in the playoffs, but at least show some character and heart, especially from the young core.

Cynic. I predict a bounce back victory tonight.
By tomorrow, Leafs Nation will be all aflutter declaring a Stanley Cup is in order.
Then, by next week it will all be shown to be another temporary facade....
Wash, rinse, repeat.
After I found out that Tampa's Zamboni driver is not the emergency goalie, the Leafs have a shot.

The Leafs took care of their most critical need, they signed Muzzin long term. Dubas played it smart for a change, you don't make trades from a position of disadvantage. Other teams were looking to fleece them, the decline would have become permanent.

Is David Ayers the new Dick Assman?
