William Nylander, he never goes to the dirty areas.

Well, he must visit them now and then, of his 20 goals so far this season,
16 have been scored from between the faceoff circles, below the dots.

Mitch and Matthews, they never played together much up until this year. Could that have been intentional by the Leafs to suppress their stats for contract negotiation purposes?
Matthews 2 goals behind leader with a game in hand. Top 10 in scoring.
Marner top 20 in scoring and has played 11 less games than Matthews. At points per game he is top 10 and ahead of Matthews.

I noticed that too and a while ago I gave him credit for going to the net. He’s been doing that a lot more this season and now it’s shown that it has worked well for him. No question he adds a dimension that helps to create one of the most potent offence in the league. It’s when the other team has the puck that he becomes a liability. It’s frustrating to watch how low his compete level is when trying to defend.

Leafs played great. Very good controlled breakouts. Without Rielly, without Muzzin. Plenty of scoring chances. Matthews alone had 10 shots. Calgary goalie was superb.

Some Monday morning thoughts and numbers :

- The Leafs are currently out of a playoff spot with 33 games left;

- Under Keefe they’ve gone 15-8-3. 15-4-1 the first 20 and 0-4-2 the last six with 6 or more goals in each of the 4 loses;

- 14 games left before the trade deadline;

- will the Leafs be buyers or sellers ? I think most likely Dubas will acquire a d man way before the deadline because of the injuries to Muzzin and Rielly. Muzzin should be back sooner but the Leafs can’t afford to wait for Reilly’s return.

- their playoff hopes will largely depend on Andersen’s performance the rest of the way. He hasn’t been very good lately;

- even if they squeeze in, they’ll likely face either Boston, Tampa or Washington and I don’t like the Leafs’ chances, although I do think they’ll match up better with Tampa because of the similarities in style of game they play.

The other teams know this and they will rape Dubas. There goes another 1st round draft pick. Also, there is no cap room.

Lately, he has been allowing early goals and the Leafs are not a good come from behind team.

Interesting article with the benefit of hindsight. Anything can still happen because the playoffs don't start until April but don't bet the farm on it.

If the Leafs do not make the playoffs will Dubas be fired?

As 24 hours in sports go, this was a good one. A remarkable Toronto Maple Leafs comeback on December 23 saw the city's second incredible revival in two days. The Leafs scored five times in the final period in beating the Carolina Hurricanes 8-6 at Scotiabank Arena, evoking the fresh memories of the Raptors' historic night.

As I said before, the Leafs have a very respectable record under Keefe 15-8-3 (.7878 points earned/total) and that includes the current losing skid. However, I don’t think they’ll be able to maintain the same pace. Even if they go .650 (.65 x 66 available points = 43 pts approximately) which will give them about 92 points, it will be close but may not be enough to pass Florida for 3rd in the division or the Metro teams for the wildcard spots.

It’s rather inconceivable to think they could go into a total funk and sink to the bottom although anything is possible I guess. If they do miss it by a narrow margin, Shanahan being the stubborn guy he is, will probably give Dubas benefit of the doubt considering all the injuries, coaching change and inconsistent goaltending. Dubas may still get one more crack to turn things around.

Dubas' problem is he has no cap room.

2020 - Barrie, Ceci and Muzzin are UFA's and Demott is a RFA.

2021 - Hyman and Andersen are UFA's.

2022 - Rielly is an UFA.

That is 100% a false statement.

As of today, presuming the salary cap stays at the same level (hint, it won't):

2020: $13,091,467

2021: $21,816,467

2022: $32,110,634

What was I saying? Need to shop Marner to get a defence man. Need to shop Rilley as well.

Clarification: I think Dubas will have cap room this year and the next two years from expiring contracts as players become UFA's and RFA's and any increase in the league mandated cap.

However, I would assume that if Dubas wants to keep his UFA's and RFA (e.g. Dermott, Hyman, Andersen, Rielly, etc.) he will have to offer them raises (just like he did with Nylander, Matthews and Marner).
